Services held for Joseph Courtney

Funeral services for Joseph “Joe” Courtney of Adel, formerly of Decorah, were held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, September 21 at St. Benedict’s Catholic Church with interment in St. Benedict’s Catholic Cemetery, both in Decorah. Rev. Gary Krapfl and Monsignor Edward Lechtenberg officiated. Pallbearers were: David Holstad, Gary Holstad, Mark McCabe, Jesse Massman, Brian Stockman, and Kevin Syverson. Frank and Balik Funeral home handled the arrangements.

Joseph, 38, died suddenly Monday, September 17, 2001 at his home.

Joseph Edward Courtney was born December 29, 1962 in Decorah, the son of Stephen and Audrey (Ruffridge) Courtney. Joe attended St. Benedict’s Catholic School and Decorah Community Schools, graduating in 1981.

Joe married Michelle Holstad in Decorah and to this union one daughter was born. They later divorced and Joe married Kathleen Vanderbee at Lake Okoboji. Joe had lived in the Des Moines area working in several different sales fields.

He is survived by his wife Kathleen of Adel; one daughter: Tera Courtney of Bondurant; one son: Ryan Courtney of Adel; one step son: George Fountas of Adel; his father: Stephen Courtney of Decorah; four brothers: Stephen of Decorah, Jim of Des Moines, John of Decorah and Eric of Des Moines; two sisters: Janet Martinson of Winona, MN and Laurie Courtney of Des Moines; and his grandmother: Ruth Ruffridge of Decorah.

Joseph was preceded in death by his mother: Audrey in 1972; grandparents: Harry and Stella Courtney and Arlin Ruffridge.
