Hazel Backhus

Funeral services for Hazel Backhaus, 88, who passed away December 19, were held December 22 in the Good Samaritan Center Chapel, Postville. The Rev. T. M. Marks conducted the service. Burial was in the Postville Cemetery.

Hazel Elizebeth Sophia (Leubka) Backhaus, the daughter of Louis and Anna (Stopperan) Leubka, was born August 8, 1911 in Bloomfield Township, Winneshiek County, near Castalia. She was baptized October 4, 1911 by the Rev. R. Kuehne and confirmed on August 16, 1925 by the Rev. E. T. Finck, both in St. Paul Lutheran Church, Postville. Hazel attended the Oak Hill School near Castalia.

On December 12, 1929 she was married to Arnold Henry Backhaus. The couple farmed near Luana for 20 years. In 1951 they moved to Postville. When they could no longer care for themselves, Arnold and Hazel became residents of Makee Manor of Waukon, where they lived for several years. Hazel became a resident of the Good Samaritan Center on July 25, 1988.

Hazel was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church of Postville and the Women of the ELCA.

She is preceded in death by her parents, her husband Arnold who died April 18, 1982, and brothers Elmer, Clarence, Roy and Merle.

Surviving are 3 sisters-in-law, Marie Lubka and Thelma Lubka of Postville and Lucille Lubka of Dubuque, as well as several nieces, nephews, and friends.

Casket bearers were David Lubka, Merlin Hansmeier, Leland Lubka, Jim Rabe, Reggie Lubka and Ronald Taylor.

The Schutte Funeral and Cremation Service of Postville was in charge of the arrangements.
