Gustave “Gus” Zweibohmer, age 89, of Decorah, Iowa, died on Tuesday, January 29, 2008, at his home following a lingering illness
Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 a.m., Friday, February 1, 2008, at St. Benedict’s Catholic Church with Rev. Phillip Gibbs officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
Friends may call from 3:00-8:00 p.m. on Thursday and Friday morning until 10:30 a.m. at the Schluter – Balik Funeral Home in Decorah, Iowa. There will be rosary Knights of Columbus Rosary at 4:00, scripture service at 5:00 p.m. and a VFW Memorial Service at 6:00 p.m. on Thursday afternoon.
Gustave Andrew Zweibohmer was born on August 24, 1918, the son of Herman and Margaret (Moellers) Zweibohmer in Ossian, Iowa. Gus attended St. Francis DeSales Catholic School in Ossian, Iowa. He served in the US Army in World War II as a heavy machine gunner. He was wounded in New Guinea and received the Combat Infantry Badge, the Bronze Star and the Purple Heart. He returned to Ossian and married Armella M. Jauert on October 9, 1945 at St. Francis DeSales Catholic Church. Gus and Armella farmed near Decorah before moving into Decorah in 1977. He worked for John Deere and Roverud Construction retiring in 1985. Gus remained active after retirement and enjoyed walking and picking up cans, mowing lawns, fishing, building bird houses and wind chimes. Gus was a member of St. Benedict’s Catholic Church, the Knights of Columbus and the Helof Holm VFW Chapter #1977.
Gus’ survivors include his wife, Armella Zweibohmer, Decorah, IA. Three sons: James (Judy) Zweibohmer, Cresco, IA; Ronald (Nancy) Zweibohmer, Decorah, IA and Dale (Judy) Zweibohmer, Ridgeway, IA. Six daughters: Mary Jane (James) Wenthold, Ossian, IA; Karen (Howard) Hanson, Tillamook, OR; LouAnn (Rick) Holthaus, Decorah, IA; Jeannette (Steve) Kimber, Cresco, IA; Michelle (Kevin) Weidow, Calmar, IA and Joan (Dale) Harrison, Decorah, IA. Grandchildren: Josia (Wes) Blokker; Jennifer (Rich) Bohr, Jackie (Kenny) Langreck, Jess (Jodi) Wenthold, Jason Wenthold, Joy Wenthold, Jill Wenthold; Ronald Zweibohmer, Jr., Bobbie Joe (Keith) Koch, Rachel Zweibohmer; Travis (Britta) Zweibohmer, Jacob (Jaime) Zweibohmer, Stephanie (Marc) Folkedahl, Kristin Zweibohmer, Shannon Zweibohmer, Gavin (Sheila) Hanson, Laurel Hanson; Brandon Holthaus, Jarrett Holthaus; Nicole Kimber, Ryan Kimber, Evan Kimber, Amanda Kimber; Shelley Kvam, Kyler Kostohryz, Jamie Harrison and Alex Harrison. Great Grandchildren: Austin & Kayla Bohr; Ron Zweibohmer III, Caitlin & Julia Zweibohmer; Araina Roderick; Dawson & Karissa Wenthold; Kendric Langreck; Micala, Kiana, Landan & Jorja Folkedahl; Matthew & Kelsey Zweibohmer, Gus & Meg Zweibohmer; Austin & Courtney Koch; Christian, Dylan, Bailey & Cheyenne Macomber and Mackenzie Kvam. Two sisters: Josephine (Mrs. Ray) Bullerman, Decorah, IA and Helen (Mrs. Adrian) Friedhof, New Hampton, IA. One sister-in-law: Hilda Zweibohmer, Alta Vista, IA and many nieces and nephews.
Gus was preceded in death by his two grandsons: Matthew Zweibohmer and Brent Holthaus. One great grandson: Jonathan Zweibohmer. His parents: Henry and Margaret Zweibohmer. Five brothers: Felix (Veronica) Zweibohmer, Hubert Zweibohmer, Hugo (Angela) Zweibohmer, Aloysius and Alphonse Zweibohmer. Three sisters: Marie (John) Bullerman, Elizabeth (Herman) Rust and Rita (Vendolin) Timp.
