Palma Zidlicky, age 90, of Decorah, Iowa, died on Sunday, April 13, 2008, at the Barthell Eastern Star Home in Decorah, Iowa, following a long illness.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m., Thursday, April 17, 2008, at the Washington Prairie Lutheran Church, rural Decorah, Iowa, with Rev. Kim Smith officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Friends may call from 5:00-8:00 p.m. on Wednesday, April 16, 2008, at the Schluter – Balik Funeral Home in Decorah, Iowa, and after 10:00 a.m. at the church on Thursday morning.

Memorials may be directed to the Washington Prairie Lutheran Church, Winneshiek County Memorial Hospice or the Barthell Eastern Star Home.

Palma Gladys (Aschim) Zidlicky was born on May 20, 1917, the daughter of Hans and Marie (Nelson) Aschim on the family farm in Glenwood Township, rural Decorah, Iowa. Palma was baptized on June 17, 1917 and confirmed in 1931 by Rev. Paul Koren at the Washington Prairie Lutheran Church. She attended Decorah High School. She was united in marriage to John J. Zidlicky on September 24, 1939 at the Washington Prairie Lutheran Church by Rev. Paul Koren. John and Palma farmed near Chester, Iowa, until 1946; near Ridgeway, Iowa until 1951 and then to a farm near Decorah. In 1991, they moved into Decorah. Palma was an active member of the Washington Prairie Lutheran Church, where she taught Sunday School and was an officer of LDR and WELCA. As a homemaker on the farm, she always had a large garden, and filled her shelves with canned goods. She enjoyed sewing & crafts and supplied her family and friends with rosemaling. Palma enjoyed spending time with her family, grandchildren and great grandchildren and watching Hawkeye Basketball. Palma became a resident of the Eastern Star Home on February 14, 2006.

Palma’s survivors include her children: Janice (Marvin “Mike”) Meyer, Ossian, IA; Dale Zidlicky & Mary Brenner, Bloomington, MN; and Ruth (Tim) Allen, Springs Branch, TX. Three grandchildren: Jacque (Jeff) Portz, Fairmont, MN; Jon (Kristy) Meyer, Ossian, IA, and Seth (Shelley) Allen, San Antonio, TX. Five great grandchildren: Justin & Jacob Portz, Carter & Rachel Meyer, and Seth Allen, Jr. Two sisters: Lucille (Lyle) Sacquitne and Agnes Winger, both of Decorah, IA. One brother: Karl (Sylvia) Aschim, Decorah, IA. Four sisters-in-law: Ann Aschim, Decorah, IA; Irene Aschim, Decorah, IA; Laura Zidlicky, Morton, IL and Gay Zidlicky, Decorah, IA. One brother-in-law: Milton Obermeier, Charles City, IA.

Palma was preceded in death by her parents: Hans and Marie Aschim. Her husband: John Zidlicky on Sept. 4, 1997. Four brothers: Albert Aschim, Henry Aschim, Lester Aschim and Harold Aschim. Two sisters: Anna Olson and Thelma Dresselhaus. Three sisters-in-law: Orpha Obermeier, Gladys Aschim and Carol Aschim. Five brothers-in-law: Art Zidlicky, Paul Zidlicky, Ray Dresselhaus, Orville Winger and Hildor Olson.
