Gatriel “Gay” Zidlicky, age 84, of Decorah, IA, died Tuesday, March 3, 2009, at the Winneshiek Medical Center in Decorah, IA, after a short illness.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, March 6, 2009, at the Washington Prairie Lutheran Church rural Decorah, IA. by Rev. Helen Beth Kuhens, with burial in the church cemetery.

Friends may call on Thursday from 3:00 – 7:00 at the Schluter Balik Funeral Home in Decorah and after 10:00 at the church on Friday.

Gatriel Mardell (Thompson) Zidlicky was born on November 28, 1924, the daughter of Arthur Milton and Enid Viola (Culbertson) Thompson on the family farm near Chester, Iowa. Gatriel was baptized and confirmed at the Chester Lutheran Church. Gatriel graduated from Chester High School in 1942 with honors, and then went on to attend Luther College in Decorah. Gatriel worked as a housekeeper for ten cents per hour and for Hormel in Austin, MN. Gatriel married Arthur Zidlicky on April 23, 1944 in Chester, Iowa, and to this union, six children were born: Gary, Dennis, Mary, Dave, John and Alan. They farmed in Nevada, Lime Springs, Bon Aire and Cresco, IA. In 1969, they moved to Decorah where they farmed, until 1976. They owned and operated Zid’s Feed & Supply in Decorah, where Gay was the bookkeeper. They moved to Spillville in 1989, and after Art’s death in 2005, she moved to Decorah. Gay was a very devoted wife and loving, nurturing mother who took exceptional care of her family. She was an excellent cook and baker and loved making homemade pies and cinnamon rolls for her family. She especially enjoyed making cookies with her grandchildren for holidays. Gay was an active member of the Washington Prairie Lutheran Church.

Gay’s survivors are one daughter: Mary (Ron) Oyloe Decorah, IA. Five sons: Gary Zidlicky & friend Nancy Elsbernd, Decorah, IA; Dennis (Donna) Zidlicky, Decorah, IA; Dave (Bonnie) Zidlicky, Ridgeway, IA; John (Joan) Zidlicky, Spillville, IA and Alan Zidlicky & friend Bill Torrey, Phoenix, AZ. Two sisters: Beth Sheeley, Coralville, IA; Donna Hanson, LeRoy, MN. One brother: Dean (LaVonne) Thompson, Riceville, IA. Fifteen grandchildren: Dean (Casey) Zidlicky, Don (Karrie) Zidlicky, Lisa & Tony Myers; Travis (Erin) Zidlicky, Mike & John Zidlicky, Derek Oyloe & Jason (fiance, Crystal Schlake) Oyloe; Christopher Zidlicky; Brandi (firance Isaac Rahto), Michelle, Kari, Jaclyn, Sondra and Sarah Zidlicky. Six great grandchildren: Colin, Carter, Cody, Dalton, Thea and Keira. Two sisters: Beth Sheeley, Coralville, IA and Donna Hanson, LeRoy, MN. One brother: Dean (LaVonne) Thompson, Riceville, IA. One sister-in-law: Laura Zidlicky, Morton, IL. One brother-in-law: Milt Obermeier, Charles City, IA.

Gay was preceded in death by her parents: Art & Enid Thompson. Her husband: Art Zidlicky on August 21, 2005. One grandson: Matthew Oyloe. One brother: Charles Thompson. One nephew: Paul Zidlicky, Jr. Two sisters-in-law: Orpha Obermeier and Palma Zidlicky. Four brothers-in-law: Glen Sheeley, Don Hanson, Paul Zidlicky and John Zidlicky. Gay’s best friends: Burdette and LaVonne Keune.
