Joseph Lawrence Woodhouse, age 89, of Decorah, Iowa, died on Saturday, July 15, 2006, at St. Mary’s Hospital in Rochester, Minnesota, following a short illness.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 a.m., Wednesday, July 19, 2006 at St. Benedict’s Catholic Church, Decorah, Iowa, with Rev. Gary Krapfl officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Friends may call from 3:00-8:00 p.m. on Tuesday and on Wednesday morning until 10:30 a.m. at the Schluter – Balik Funeral Home in Decorah. There will be a rosary at 4:00 and a scripture service at 5:00 p.m. on Tuesday.

Joseph Lawrence Woodhouse was born on October 8, 1916 the son of James A. and Mary T. (Drew) Woodhouse in Dubuque, Iowa. Joe moved to Decorah with his family, when he was one year old and lived on a farm west of Decorah. He attended rural school and helped on the family farm. He sold hatching eggs to Bolson Feeds and this is where he met his wife, Janice Dideriksen (Headington), who worked as a secretary. They were married on June 21, 1944 at St. Benedict’s Catholic Church in Decorah. Joe and Janice farmed his grandfather’s farm in Madison Township until 1951, when they moved to their present farm along Highway #9 west of Decorah. While Joe farmed, he also worked as a carpenter, delivered coal and was employed at Deco Products. He retired from Deco in 1981 and farming in 1989. Although, Joe never had a music lesson, he enjoyed playing the accordion with Elmer Neste and Frank O’Brien at many house dances. Joe enjoyed doing carpentry work, gardening and music. Joe was a member of St. Benedict’s Catholic Church and the Knights of Columbus.

Joe’s survivors include his wife, Janice Woodhouse, Decorah, IA. Five children: Tom (Mary) Woodhouse, Carlisle, IA; Linda Woodhouse & husband Doug Peterson, Alexandria, VA; Mary (Rich) Boesch, Sioux City, IA; Dennis Woodhouse, Decorah, IA and Paul (Darlene) Woodhouse, Decorah, IA. One son-in-law: Roger Gruenke, Shawnee, KS. Eleven grandchildren: Matt Woodhouse, Erik Woodhouse, Katie (Luke) Shields, Ryan Hadenfeld, Ashlin Hadenfeld, Christopher Boesch, Alicia Woodhouse, Josh Woodhouse, Julia Peterson, Andrew Shields and Mark Boesch. Two sisters: Marge (Jim) Bednarz, Minnetonka, MN and Marion Walker, Klamath Falls, OR.

Joe was preceded in death by his parents; one daughter: Beverly Gruenke on April 21, 2003; on sister: Helen Anderson & husband Andy; one brother: Edmund Woodhouse in infancy and one brother-in-law: Keefe Walker.

Memorial may be given to the Howard Residential Care Facility, 21668 -80th Street, Cresco, IA 52136.
