Richard “Richie” Winter, age 84, of Calmar, Iowa, died on Sunday, July 11, 2010, at Wellington Place in Decorah, Iowa.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m., Friday, July 16, 2010, at the Calmar Lutheran Church in Calmar, Iowa, with Rev. Norman Bauer presiding. Burial will be in St. Peter’s Lutheran Cemetery, in Eldorado, Iowa.

Friends may call from 3:00-7:00 p.m. on Thursday, July 15, 2010, at the Schluter – Balik Funeral Home, French Chapel in Calmar, Iowa, and after 9:30 a.m., at the church on Friday morning.

Richard Frederick “Richie” Winter was born on February 21, 1926, the son of Walter and Lucy (Meine) Winter in Postville, Iowa. Richard was baptized and confirmed at St. Peter’s Lutheran Church in Eldorado. He attended Ossian Public School, Dover #4 Country school and West Union High School. He served in the US Army from March 8, 1945 to May 27, 1947. Richard married Vivian Hanson on Oct. 26, 1947, and to this union, five daughters were born: Sharon, Linda, Cinda, Connie and Lisa. They later divorced. Richard married LouAnn Leuenberger Brekke on Dec. 2, 1961 in Austin, MN, and to this union, one son was born: Allen Winter. Richard farmed in the northeast Iowa area from 1949-69. He worked as a carpenter for Black Hawk Construction from 1967-68. Richie worked road construction over the years for Fred Carlson Co., Reilly Construction, Roverud Construction and for Wiltgen Construction. Richie enjoyed his coffee group at the Train Station and sold tickets for twelve years at all South Winn sporting events. Richie was a member of the Calmar Lutheran Church, where he served on the church council and helped with the children’s group on Wednesday afternoons. He also enjoyed supplying the candy for the children’s bags at Christmas at church and enjoyed helping with the all church activities. Richie was also an avid Iowa Hawkeye and Chicago Cub fan. Over the years, Richie and LouAnn enjoyed their times together going to the Boat and Friday nights to Rossville for fish.

Richie is survived by his four daughters: Sharon (Mike) Schroyer, West Union, IA; Linda (Larry) Larson, Liberty, MO; Connie (Bill) Dahlke, Marshalltown, IA; and Lisa (Gary) Schneider, Elgin, IA. His former wife: LouAnn Winter, Calmar, IA. One step-daughter: Sandy (Robert) Bartelt, Calmar, IA. Ten grandchildren: Michelle (Barry) Armstrong, Chad (Mary) Schroyer, Jennifer (Kyle) Barnes, Heather (Jeff) Renzelman, Megan Dahlke, Matt Dahlke, Jessica (Craig) Moser, Jamie (Michal) Germann, Josh (Whitney) Schneider and Jason Schneider. Four step-grandchildren: Scott Bartelt, Chris (Holly) Bartelt, Mandy (Joe) Huebbe and Kelly (Kevin) Delaney. Fourteen great grandchildren: Antonio, KeAndre & Erica Armstrong; Dakota, Cayden & Ashton Schroyer; Ava Barnes; Clay, Cole & Taryn Moser; Jacob & Tate Germann; and Owen & Olivia Schneider. Five step great grandchildren: Trevor Harbaugh, Blake & Anna Bartelt, Colton Bartelt and Ethan Huebbe. One sister: Dorothy Fink, Maynard, IA.

Richie was preceded in death by his parents: Walter and Lucy (Meine) Winter. Two children: Cinda Sue Winter in 1949 and Allen Winter in 1991. One granddaughter: Sarah Dahlke in 2004. Two brothers: Ralph and Loren Winter both in infancy. One sister: Marcella Reinking.
