Nicholas Winter, age 84, of St. Lucas, IA died Thursday, December 15, 2011 at the Palmer Lutheran Health Center in West Union, IA.
Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, December 20, 2011 at St. Luke’s Catholic Church in St. Lucas, IA Rev. Nick March presiding, burial will be in the church cemetery.
There will be a visitation from 3:00 – 7:00 P.M., Monday at St. Luke’s Catholic Church with a rosary at 4:00 and a scripture service at 5:00 there will also be visitation after 9:30 at the church on Tuesday.
Nicholas John Winter was born on April 19, 1927 on the family farm two miles west of St. Lucas, IA to Peter and Anna (Kuehner) Winter. He attended St. Luke’s School in St. Lucas, IA and graduated in 1945. On May 8, 1951, he married Germaine Schmitt at St. Luke’s Catholic Church. He farmed all his life, starting out first on the family farm with his father and later moving to Germaine’s parent’s farm a mile away, which is their present home. They have one daughter, Donna who resides in Cedar Falls. They also had a son Duane who died in infancy. In his younger years he enjoyed playing baseball for the local team and continued to watch baseball and softball whenever possible. He also enjoyed hunting and fishing, especially fishing with Br. Wendelin Blong at the Mississippi River. After retiring he enjoyed his time playing cards downtown in the mornings. He was a member of the Rosary Society and served on church council. His greatest joy was watching his granddaughters, Nikki, Stacey, and Haley growing up and visiting at the farm.
Nick is survived by his wife: Germaine, St. Lucas, IA One daughter: Donna Winter, Cedar Falls, IA. Three granddaughters: Nikki and Stacey Erickson of Waterloo and Haley Erickson of Cedar Falls, a brother Florian (Eileen) Winter, St. Lucas, IA Brother-in-law: James Schneberger Calmar, IA.
Nick was preceded in death by a son: Duane, great grandson: Jadyn Comer, his parents: Peter and Annie Winter, Sister: Hilda Huber and her husband Henry, and, Sister-in-law: Alma Schneberger.
