Marian T. Wilkins, age 85, of Decorah,Iowa, died Saturday, February 14, 2009 at Wellington Place in Decorah following a lengthy illness.

Memorial Services will be held at 1:00 PM Wednesday, February 18, 2009 at Glenwood Lutheran Church in rural Decorah by Rev. Doug Mathison with burial in Glenwood Lutheran Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 4-7 PM Tuesday at Fjelstul Funeral Home in Decorah, Iowa and one hour before the service at the church.

Marian Thelma Wilkins was born May 11, 1923, in her family home in Winneshiek County, Decorah, Iowa, the daughter of Oscar P. and Florence L. (Williams) Lovestuen. She was baptized on June 17, 1923 and confirmed on May 15, 1938 at Glenwood Lutheran Church. She was united in marriage to Wilbur H. Wilkins on February 7, 1949 at Glenwood Lutheran Church. They were later divorced. This union was blessed with eleven children: Kenneth, Robert, Lorna, Loren, Ruth Ann, Kurt, Keith, Niles, Patricia, Marcella, and a son that died at birth.

Marian spoke only Norwegian until she was six and attended parochial and public schools at Glenwood. She graduated from Decorah High School on May 28, 1941. She then earned her teaching degree from Luther College and went to the University of Iowa for nurses training. Marian served in the Nurses Cadet Corps. She taught kindergarten and first grade in Guttenberg in 1943-44 and at Glenwood #5 (Lee school) for three years.

Marian was an active, lifelong member of Glenwood Lutheran Church where she had been involved as church organist, a Bible school teacher, and in Women’s Circle. She taught Bible school at Canoe Ridge in 1942-43. She had been on the Care Review Committee for Aase Haugen Home for many years, and belonged to Mothers’ Club and L.A.S. She wrote Glenwood news for the Decorah Newspaper for ten years.

Marian was a devoted and loving mother, grandmother and great grandmother who will be greatly missed. She enjoyed reading, playing the piano, sewing and crocheting. She loved to travel and had been in all 50 states (except Alaska), as well as eight countries. She was preceded in death by her parents; her son, Robert; an infant son; two great-grandchildren: Jonathan Zweibohmer and Anthony Schierholz; and her daughter-in-law, Cathy Wilkins.

Marian is survived by nine of her children: Kenneth (JoAnn) Wilkins of Tucson, AZ, Lorna (Charles) Duvel of Postville, IA, Loren Wilkins of Decorah, IA, Ruth Ann (Leo) Walleser of Menomonie, WI, Kurt (Lucy) Wilkins of Lake Kabetogama, MN, Keith Wilkins of Tucson, AZ, Niles (Denise) Wilkins of Lake Kabetogama, MN, Patricia (Dave) Vine of Decorah, IA, and Marcella (Gerald) Berg of Calmar, IA; 31 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; one sister, Adeline (Walter) Langland of Decorah, IA; six step-children: Donald (Marge) Wilkins of Redding, CA, Eldean Wilkins of Decorah, IA, Richard (Wilma) Wilkins of Karlsruhe, Germany, Lorraine Sacquitne of Decorah, IA, Marjorie O’Hare of St. Joseph, MO, and Ann (Orvin) Hotvedt of Decorah, IA; several step-grandchildren and -great-grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.
