Roger Westby, age 80, of Decorah, IA, died on Monday, December 5, 2011, at Wellington Place in Decorah, IA.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m., Saturday, December 10, 2011, at the Glenwood Lutheran Church, with Rev. Allen and Rev. Gene Hermeier presiding. Burial will be in the Glenwood East Cemetery at a later date.

Friends may call from 3:00-7:00 p.m., on Friday at the Schluter – Balik Funeral Home in Decorah, and also after 9:30 a.m., at the church on Saturday morning.

Roger Curtis Westby was born on June 10, 1931, the son of Carl and Rachel (Nash) Westby in Allamakee County. Roger was baptized on July 12, 1931 and confirmed on May 19, 1946, both at the Glenwood Lutheran Church. Roger attended country school, and in 2002, he received his honorary High School diploma at Farmington High School in Farmington, MN, on Veteran’s Day, where his granddaughter, Brigit was teaching. Roger served in the US Navy, from 1951-53. On May 24, 1953, Roger married Arlene Carlsborg at the Glenwood Lutheran Church and to this union, five children were born: Diane, Brenda, Karen, Brian and Renae. Roger and Arlene started farming in 1955, buying their first farm in 1963. Roger loved farming and raised Registered Holstein cattle for many years. He retired in 1986 and moved to Freeport. He continued to help on the farm until his health forced him to quit in 2008. Roger enjoyed and loved spending time with his family and grandchildren. He also enjoyed doing crossword puzzles, jigsaw puzzles and to play cards. Above all, Roger loved to visit, tell a joke or story to with all he came in contact with. Roger was a lifetime member of the Glenwood Lutheran Church.

Roger is survived by his wife: Arlene Westby, Decorah, IA. Five children: Diane (Paul) Larsen, Belvidere, IL; Brenda (Dave) Broghamer, Decorah, IA; Karen (David) Jones, Cresco, IA; Brian (Karen) Westby, Decorah, IA; and Renae (Craig) Adam, Rossville, IA. Eleven grandchildren: Adam (Danyel) Larsen, Derek (friend, Sandra Domico) Larsen, Brigit (Brent) Storhoff, Jared (Sara) Broghamer, Kristy (Kyle) Tarwater, Sara (Trevor) Thomas, Ethan Jones, Conner Westby & Kaijsa (friend,Zach Albertson) Westby, Corey & Emily Adam. Three great grandchildren: Brynn & Claire Storhoff and Kaden Tarwater. Four sisters: Ethel Brandt, Decorah, IA; Eunice (Robert) Denk, Decorah, IA; Audrey (Dale) Barth, Decorah, IA; and Barbara (William) Radke, Wabasha, MN. Two brothers: Gordon (Peggy) Westby, Canyon Lake, CA; and Lyle (Jackie) Westby, Waukon, IA. One sister-in-law: Ruth Westby, Mabel, MN. One brother-in-law: Lester (Alycia) Carlsborg, Ames, IA.

Roger was preceded in death by his parents: Carl & Rachel (Nash) Westby. His father and mother-in-law: Joseph & Lillian Carlsborg. Two brothers: Kenneth Westby and Arden Westby. Three brothers-in-law: Wesley Brandt, Lester Carlsborg and Jack Schissel. One nephew: Lowell Brandt.
