William “Bill” Wermers, age 71, of Spillville, Iowa died Thursday, February 11, 2010 at New Iberia LA.

Mass of Christian Burial will be 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, February 18, 2010 at the St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church in Spillville, IA By Rev. Donald Hawes. Burial will be in the St. Clements Cemetery rural Spillville, IA.

Visitation will be Wednesday from 3:00 – 8:00 p.m. at the Balik Funeral Home in Spillville with a scripture service at 4:00 and after 10:00 at the church on Thursday

William August Wermers was born in his family home on September 16, 1938 in Dimock, SD, to Leo August and Josephine E. (Germscheid) Wermers. Bill was baptized and confirmed in his faith at SS Peter & Paul Church in Dimock, SD. Bill graduated from Parkston High School, Parkston, SD in 1956. He earned his Bachelor of Science in Education from Southern State College, South Dakota on August 14, 1964. Bill also earned his Master of Arts from the University of Northern Iowa, Cedar Falls, IA, on August 2, 1974. In 1969, Bill accepted employment as an accounting instructor at Northeast Iowa Community College, Calmar IA, where he later retired in 1999, after thirty years of service. Bill was united in marriage to Eunice Evelyn Lubeke on December 20, 1969 in Decorah, IA. Bill and Eunice have two sons; Mark William born October 18, 1970 and Paul Leo born on July 13, 1972. In the fall of 1975, they purchased a house in Spillville, IA. Bill enjoyed being involved in many community and social activities, but was especially fond of golfing. Bill truly loved being a grandpa and would take every chance he could to spend time with his boys. Bill held close to his heart, his extended family, many nieces, nephews and neighbors. Bill enjoyed cruising on his red chopper and was best known for his Hickory Smoked Iowa Chops, which he proudly served to family and friends during numerous gatherings each year.

Bill is survived by his wife, Eunice, Spillville, IA. His sons and their wives: Mark & Michelle (Madsen) Wermers, Rochester MN and Paul & Sadie (Schiller) Wermers, Plainview, MN. Grandchildren: Shayde William Wermers; Theodore Joseph Wermers; and Carver Dean Wermers. Siblings and their spouses: Florence & George Willis, Sioux Falls, SD; Raymond & Janice Wermers, Watertown, SD; and Herbert & Helen Wermers, Pueblo, CO. Surviving Spouses: Doris Wermers, Sioux Falls, SD; Clarissa Wermers, Sun City, CA, and many other relatives.

Bill was preceded in death by his parents: Leo and Josephine Wermers. Siblings: Marie Wermers, Iona (Arthur) Dutton, James Wermers and Leo Wermers.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Spillville Public Library or Northeast Iowa Community College Memorial Scholarship fund in honor of Bill.
