Byron Torvik, age 81, of Decorah, Iowa, died on Tuesday, December 2, 2008, at the Winneshiek Medical Center in Decorah, Iowa, following a long illness.

A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m., on Monday, December 8, 2008 at the First Lutheran Church in Decorah, Iowa, with Rev. Steven Jacobsen officiating. Burial and military rites will be held at the Phelps Cemetery, Decorah, Iowa.

There will be no visitation, the Schluter – Balik Funeral Home in Decorah is in charge of arrangements.

Byron Lee Torvik was born on December 28, 1926, the son of Bastian and Mae Alice (Jensen) Torvik in Stanley, Iowa. As a young child, Byron moved with his family to Decorah, where he graduated from Decorah High School in 1944. After high school, Byron worked on the Alcan Highway and attended Luther College for one year and served in the US Army, during WWII. Byron married Patricia Thompson and to this union, two children were born: John and Katherine. Byron worked construction for various companies, working at Luther College and building bridges on Interstate 35 and throughout the state. Byron married Rosa Bergan on December 10, 1961, at the First Lutheran Church in Decorah, and to this union, three children were born: Martha, James and Matthew. Byron owned and operated Oneota Bowling Lanes for many years, retiring in July 1983. Byron enjoyed fishing, visiting his children and grandchildren, “tinkering up on the hill,” and having coffee at McDonald’s with the “Old Geezer’s”. Byron was a member of the First Lutheran Church and the Bernatz-Symonds American Legion Post#163.

Byron’s survivors include his wife: Rosa Torvik, Decorah, IA. Five children: John (Karen) Torvik, CA; Kathy (Bill) Glowac, Austin, MN; Martha Torvik, Marion, IA; James (Cindy) Torvik, Clive, IA and Matthew Torvik, Waterloo, IA. Seven grandchildren: Alice Torvik, Stacey Torvik, Kristin (Matthew) Larson, Stephanie (Nate) Jansen, Lindsay, Meredith & Nathan Torvik and six great grandchildren. One sister: Sandra Carmain, King of Prussia, PA, along with several nieces and nephews.

Byron was preceded in death by his parents: Bastian and Mae Alice (Jensen) Torvik. Two brothers: Peter (Eleanor) Torvik and James (Ileen) Torvik.
