William "Bill" D. Sylvanus, age 71, of Wabasha, MN and formerly of Decorah, Iowa, died Tuesday, February 28, 2006 in Mankato, MN.

Memorial Services will be held at 11:00 A.M. Friday, March 3, 2006 at Decorah Lutheran Church by Rev. Bryan Robertson and Rev. Allen Vik. Military Honors will be accorded by Helof-Holm V.F.W. Post No. 1977, Bernatz-Symonds American Legion Post No. 163, D.A.V. Hamre-Giesen Chapter No. 8 and AMVETS Post No. 96, all of Decorah. Inurnment will be held at a later date at St. Ligouri Cemetery in Greenleafton, MN. There will be no visitation. Fjelstul Funeral Home of Decorah is in charge of the arrangements.

William "Bill" Dean Sylvanus was born on December 9, 1934 in Minburn, Iowa, the son of William and Fern (Rector) Sylvanus. He graduated from Decorah (Iowa) High School. Bill joined the Air Force on October 10, 1957. He spent time over seas in Korea and Japan. His last duty assignment and major command was with the 33rd Communications Squadron. He earned the Good Conduct Medal and Air force Longevity Service Award.

He was united in marriage with Theresa “Tess” (O'Connor) Hovey in Preston MN. They later made their home in Wabasha, MN.

Bill recently worked at the National Eagle Center in Wabasha, MN. He enjoyed his time with family and friends and his companion dog Dee Dee; his eagles, Harriet, named after Harriet Tubman, Columbia, named in honor of the space shuttle Columbia, and Angel, named for those who have gone on before us. Bill was an avid historian, movie and music lover. He was an active member of the Chamber of Commerce, the Historical Society and the National Eagle Center all in Wabasha, MN.

Bill lives on in our lives as his beloved Mississippi River flows on; may he forever soar with the eagles.

He is survived by his four step-daughters, Joanne (Matthew) Hovey-McBride of Lake Crystal, MN., Connie (Patrick) Hovey-Pearce of Madison Lake, MN, Julie (Chuck Brunsvold) Hovey of Granger, MN, and Angela (David) Little of St. Paul, MN; eight grandchildren, Jairus Hovey-McBride and Collin Hovey-McBride, Gabrielle Hovey-Prescott, Jason (Dawn) Mensink, Kari (Ron) Still, Megan Hovey-Mensink, Jada Hovey-Brunsvold and John Little; five great-grandchildren, Korben, Paige, Faith, Kailey, Payton; four sisters, Edna (LaMoyne) Thompson of Decorah, IA, Sharon (Jerry) Schmidt of Cedar Rapids, IA, Barbara (Douglas) Cromwell of Atlanta, TX and Kathy (Ronald) Dehning of Decorah, IA; two brothers, Ed McCreight of Davenport, IA and Roger (Ruth) McCreight of Tucson, AZ; and his faithful companion dog Dee Dee

Bill was preceded in death by his father, mother and his beloved wife "Tess."
