Elizabeth S. Staats, age 91, of Decorah, Iowa, died April 21, 2006 at Barthell Eastern Star Nursing Home in Decorah.

Memorial Services will be held at 11:00 A.M. Thursday, August 24, 3006 at First United Methodist Church in Decorah.

She is survived by two daughters Barbara (James) Dale of Decorah, Iowa and Carol Webber of Webster, New York; four grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Elizabeth Lorah Satterfield was born November 1, 1914 to Charles and Elizabeth Bell (Kelley) Satterfield in the village of Cape May Courthouse, New Jersey. Graduated from the public schools of Cape May, New Jersey, she then earned a Bachelor of Science in Education degree from Trenton (NJ) State Teachers College (now The College of New Jersey) in 1935. After teaching K-12 public school vocal music for three years in Audubon, New Jersey, she married Everett Hamilton Staats on July 20, 1938.

The couple had two children, Barbara Ruth and Carol Jean, and moved to Iowa in 1948. Betty directed church choirs, taught piano and organ lessons, occasionally substitute taught in public schools and for 20 years transcribed books into Braille for the Iowa Department for the Blind.

Her many interests and activities included reading extensively, writing, sewing, knitting and crocheting; teaching Sunday school (especially adult Bible study) and giving educational programs; travel, birds and flowers; and volunteering in church and community. Until her mid-80s she enjoyed daily walks of one or two miles. At her death she was a member of First United Methodist Church of Decorah, Iowa; United Methodist Women; and Chapter GO, PEO Sisterhood.

Betty was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, and her only sibling, Ruth S. Bennett.

The family suggests memorial gifts in lieu of flowers to Decorah Public Library, Decorah Free Clinic, Winneshiek County Habitat for Humanity, Helping Services for Northeast Iowa, or (United Methodist-related) Rust College in Holly Springs, Mississippi.
