Toney Snyder, age 104, of Ridgeway, Iowa, died Wednesday, September 26, 2007 at the Aase Haugen Home in Decorah following a long illness.
Funeral Services will be held at 11:00 A.M. Monday, October 1, 2007 at Peace Lutheran Church in Ridgeway, Iowa by Rev. Ginny Olson with burial in Bohemian National Cemetery, rural Protivin, IA.
Friends may call from 3:00 – 6:00 P.M. on Sunday, September 30, 2007 at Fjelstul Funeral Home in Decorah and on Monday after 10:00 A.M. at the church.
Antony “Toney” Snyder was born April 27, 1903 near Conover, Iowa, the son of Jacob and Magdelena (Leeble) Snyder. He was baptized and confirmed at St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church in Spillville, IA. Toney attended parochial school in Spillville and then the Bergan Country School near Ridgeway.
He was united in marriage to Bessie S. Haskovec on November 29, 1937 in Cresco, IA. To this union two children were born, Leona Helen and Duane (Sonny) James.
Toney made his home with Bessie in Ridgeway. From 1925 on Toney was a carpenter. He built lots of buildings and did repair work, doing some work on most of the houses in Ridgeway and surrounding countryside. He was a jack of all trades. He also drove the school bus for 25 years. He was a fireman for 61 years, a telephone lineman for Lincoln Telephone Company, a house painter, a cream hauler from 1928 to 1930 and he spliced hay ropes for farmers making hay. Toney had many interests, like making bedroom sets, rockers, desks, headboards and lefse sticks.
He enjoyed making things for his grandchildren. Whenever he was driving or working, Toney was always whistling.
He loved his family, his grandchildren & great-grandchildren very much and he will be missed immensely.
On January 8, 2002 he became a resident of the Aase Haugen Home following a fall that resulted in a broken leg. Toney died on Wednesday, September 26, 2007 at the Aase Haugen Home at the age of 104 years, 4 months & 26 days.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his brother, Joe Snyder; his sisters, Emma Humpal, Lucy Seifert, Christina Phillips and Mary Phillips; and his brothers-in-law, Leonard Haskovec and Earl Riehle.
He is survived by his wife of 69 years, Bessie of Decorah; his daughter, Leona (Robert) Rosendahl of Decorah; his son, Duane (Rita) Snyder of Decorah; nine grandchildren: Alan Rosendahl, John (Beth) Rosendahl, Karen (Ed) Stamper, Alyce (Jeff) Schaller & Marilyn (Lee) Anderson and Kimberly (Steve) Pettit, Brian (Jody) Snyder, Steven (Dana) Snyder & David (Tron) Snyder; 18 great-grandchildren: Marcus, Jake & Julia, Benton & Chelsey, Jordan, Andrew & Autumn, Annika & Betsy, Lindsey & Leah, Drew & Kinzie, Lily & Abby and Mya & Ryann; 2 sisters-in-law Helen Riehle of Spillville and Irene Haskovec of Protivin; and several nieces and nephews.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to the Peace Lutheran Church Maintenance Fund at 2541 County Road W14, Ridgeway, IA 52165, or Bohemian National Cemetery c/o Ken Haskovec at 24337 180th St, Cresco, IA 52136, or the Ridgeway Fire Department c/o Ridgeway City Clerk, PO Box 42, Ridgeway, IA 52165.
