Bessie S. Snyder, age 90, of Ridgeway, Iowa, died Monday, February 23, 2009 at the Aase Haugen Home in Decorah following a short illness.

Funeral Services will be held at 11:00 A.M. Thursday, February 26, 2009 at Peace Lutheran Church in Ridgeway by Rev. Ginny Olson and Rev. Phillip Olson with burial in Bohemian National Cemetery, rural Protivin, IA.

Visitation is from 4:00 – 7:00 P.M. on Wednesday, February 25 at Fjelstul Funeral Home in Decorah and on Thursday after 10:00 A.M. at the church.

Bessie Stella (Haskovec) Snyder was born September 12, 1918 at home in rural Howard County, Iowa, the daughter of James and Stella (Sobolik) Haskovec. She was baptized, along with Leona and Duane, on May 1, 1955 and they were all confirmed on May 15, 1955 at Ridgeway United Lutheran Church. She attended Country School No. 10.

She was united in marriage to Antony “Toney” Snyder on November 29, 1937 in Cresco, IA. This union was blessed with two children: Leona Helen and Duane “Sonny” James.

Bessie and Toney made their home in Ridgeway. Bessie worked at Fosse Produce, Hove’s Grocery Store & Locker, Sanderson Restaurant, Howard Bakken Grocery and then was a cook at the Ridgeway School for many years. Next she worked at Wapsie Produce for 19 years and then at the Aase Haugen Home for 17 years. Bessie also did housecleaning and interior painting. Bessie was a long-time, active member of Peace Lutheran Church in Ridgeway. Bessie loved to cook and bake. She loved her family, including her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, very much. She will be missed immensely.

When Toney became a resident of the Aase Haugen Home on January 8, 2002, she was there to be with him every day until she moved into the Home herself on October 2, 2006.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Toney, on September 26, 2007; her parents; one brother, Leonard Haskovec; and one brother-in-law, Earl Riehle.

She is survived by her daughter, Leona (Robert) Rosendahl of Decorah; her son, Duane “Sonny” (Rita) Snyder of Decorah; nine grandchildren: Alan Rosendahl, John (Beth) Rosendahl, Karen (Ed) Stamper, Alyce (Jeff) Schaller, Marilyn (Lee) Anderson, Kimberly (Steve) Pettit, Brian (Jody) Snyder, Steven (Dana) Snyder and David (Tron) Snyder; 18 great-grandchildren: Marcus Rosendahl, Jake and Julia Rosendahl, Benton (Greta) & Chelsey Stamper, Jordan, Andrew and Autumn Schaller, Annika and Betsy Anderson, Lindsey and Leah Pettit, Drew and Kinzie Snyder, Lily and Abby Snyder, and Mya and Ryann Snyder; one sister, Helen Riehle of Spillville, IA; one sister-in-law, Irene Haskovec of Protivin, IA; and several nieces and nephews.
