Betty I. Smith, age 75, of Decorah, died Friday, December 4, 2009, at the Winneshiek Medical Center in Decorah, Iowa.

Memorial Services will be at 11:00 A.M. Thursday, December 10, 2009, at Grace Episcopal Church in Decorah. Inurnment is at St. Joseph's Episcopal Church Cremains Garden in Gainesville, FL.

Betty Irene Rule was born on April 23, 1934 in Laporte City, Iowa. Betty was the daughter of Paul Rule and Nessa Tuttle Rule. She resided with her parents on a farm north of Waterloo and attended a rural school. Betty attended West Waterloo High School and graduated in 1952.

Betty Irene Rule and David Coles Smith were joined in marriage at St. Paul’s Methodist Church in Waterloo on March 15, 1953. On January 11, 1954, Betty gave birth to their daughter Pauline in Waterloo. Later in 1954 the couple moved to Cresco where Betty gave birth to her second child, a son who they named Earl who was born on January 25, 1956. Betty was active in the Methodist Church in Cresco.

In 1956 the couple moved to Decorah where Betty maintained the household and was active in the Methodist Church. In 1960 she moved with her family to Northbrook, Illinois. Then in 1966 the family moved to East Lansing, Michigan. In 1970 Betty and the family moved to DeKalb, Illinois.

From 1972 to 1976 the family resided in Fayetteville, Arkansas. In 1976 they moved to Missoula, Montana. Later in 1978 the family moved to Gainesville, Florida where they remained until the turn of the century in 2000. Betty was active in the St. Joseph’s Episcopal Church in Gainesville.

In 2000 Betty and David returned to Decorah for their retirement years. Betty enjoyed playing bridge and the church was an important aspect of her life. She was a member of the Grace Episcopal Church, the Monday Club, and Sarah Circle of the First Methodist Church. She also enjoyed playing bridge at the senior center. But her real passion was for the members of her family whom she loved deeply; the love and devotion was returned in equal measure by her husband and children.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her son, Earl who passed away on January 1, 1990 and her brother Ted, who was killed in action in Vietnam.

She is survived by her husband, David, and her daughter, Pauline who resides in Trenton, Florida.

In lieu of flowers remembrances may be sent to the Grace Episcopal Church, PO Box 4, Decorah, Iowa 52101.
