Eleanor Slifka, age 80, of Decorah, Iowa, died on Monday, October 9, 2006, at St. Mary’s Hospital in Rochester, MN, from complications of surgery.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 a.m., Friday, October 13, 2006, at St. Benedict’s Catholic Church, in Decorah, Iowa, with Rev. Gary Krapfl officiating. Burial will be at a later date.

Friends may call from 3:00-7:00 p.m. on Thursday at the Schluter – Balik Funeral Home, Decorah, IA. The casket will be closed at the church on Friday morning. There will be a rosary at 4:00 p.m. and Auxiliary Memorial Service at the funeral home at 5:00 p.m.

Eleanor Evelyn (Tieskotter) Slifka was born on July 26, 1926, the daughter of Henry and Clara (Schneider) Tieskotter at home, south of Decorah. Eleanor attended country school near the State Fish Hatchery. She worked various jobs and moved with her family to Cresco, when she was sixteen. Eleanor married Elmer R. Slifka on April 22, 1946 in Cresco, Iowa. They moved to Mabel, MN, in June of 1947 and lived there until they moved into Decorah in 2001. Eleanor worked at Mansfield Manufacturing and Control Data in Spring Grove, MN and at Wapsie Produce and Rockwell Collins until she retired. Eleanor was an avid cook, and enjoyed knitting, crocheting, cross-stitching and gardening.

Eleanor’s survivors include her husband of sixty years, Elmer Slifka, Decorah, IA. One daughter: Sandra (Chad) Evans, Decorah, IA. Two grandchildren: Trevor (Maddy) Gossman, Cresco, IA and Shannon Duncan, Decorah, IA. Two great grandchildren: Sierra and Aria. One brother-in-law: Daniel (Irene) Slifka, Cresco, IA. One sister-in-law: Dorothy Slifka, Waukon, IA and several nieces and nephews.

Eleanor was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers: Arnold (Mildred) Tieskotter and Gordon Tieskotter; one sister: Gertrude Schissel; and two nephews: Bill and James Tieskotter.
