Agnes Skretta, age 96, of Fort Atkinson, Iowa, died on Wednesday, February 1, 2012, at the Aase Haugen Nursing Home in Decorah, IA.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m., Monday, February 6, 2012, at St. John’s Catholic Church in Fort Atkinson, Iowa, with Rev. Nick March presiding. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Friends may call from: 2:00 – 6:00 on Sunday and also from 9:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m., on Monday at the Schluter – Balik Funeral Home, Chekal Chapel in Fort Atkinson, Iowa. There will be a rosary at 4:00 p.m., and a scripture service at 5:00 p.m. on Sunday.

Agnes Ann (Barloon) Skretta was born on October 12, 1915, near Little Turkey, Iowa. She was the daughter of Frank and Eleanor (Novotny) Barloon. She attended country school through 8th grade near Little Turkey and Protivin, Iowa. On October 17, 1939, she was united in marriage to Edward Skretta at St. John’s Nepomucene in Fort Atkinson, Iowa. To this union there were eight children born. In the early years, they farmed near Little Turkey, they moved to Fort Atkinson in 1950, where they operated a restaurant, opened Skretta’s Produce, and sold Watkins products. Agnes was the youngest and the last surviving sibling of her brothers and sisters. Agnes was an active member of the St. John’s Catholic Church, Catholic Order of Foresters, and the American Legion Ladies Auxiliary. She enjoyed praying the rosary, attending mass, visiting the nursing homes, playing Bingo and cards.

Agnes is survived by her children: Joe (Marcy) Skretta, Fort Atkinson, Iowa, Larry (Norma) Skretta, Decorah, Iowa, Mark (Rebecca) Skretta, Fort Atkinson, Iowa, Jeanne (Joel) Schnitzler, Lima, Montana. Seventeen grandchildren: Dennis, Debbie, Doug (Grace), Darren (Bobbie) Balik and Darci Ritter, Andy (Bridget) Skretta, Amy (Ron) Morgan, Jason and James Skretta, Mathew (Amy) Skretta, David (Kelly) Skretta, Jessica (Darrell) Hageman, Adam, Jonathan, and Annalea Skretta, Jayme and Jenna Schnitzler. Along with numerous great grandchildren, and nieces and nephews. One daughter-in-law: Dorothy Skretta, Johnston, IA. One son-in-law: Jim (Mary Jean) Balik, Waterloo, IA

Agnes was preceded in death by her husband Edward Skretta, parents Frank and Eleanor Barloon, one daughter Charlene Balik, three sons James, Francis, and Raymond Skretta. One granddaughter: Lori Skretta and one great granddaughter: Elle Reiner. Four brothers: Joseph (Doris) Barloon, Phillip (Lucille) Barloon, Edward (Joyce) Barloon, and Adolph (Mary) Barloon. One sister: Otilla (William) Kuhn. Two brothers-in-law: Jerome (Alice) Skretta and August (Wilma) Skretta.
