Merlin Rilling, age 84, of Fort Atkinson, Iowa, died on Friday December 11, 2009, at his home in Fort Atkinson after a long illness.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m., on Tuesday, December 15, 2009 at St. John’s Catholic Church in Fort Atkinson, Iowa, with Rev. David Beckman presiding. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Friends may call from 3:00 – 7:00 p.m. on Monday, December 14, 2009 and from 8:00 – 10:00 a.m. on Tuesday morning at the Schluter – Balik Funeral Home, Chekal Chapel in Fort Atkinson, Iowa. There will be a rosary at 4:00 p.m. and a scripture service at 6:00 p.m. on Monday.

Merlin Christopher Rilling was born on March 6, 1925, the son of Chris and Rose (Kafka) Rilling on the family farm, rural Fort Atkinson, Iowa. He was united in marriage to Rose A. Schmitt on May 28, 1952, at St. Luke’s Catholic Church, St. Lucas, IA. Together they farmed, milking cows, raising hogs, ducks, geese, and chickens, and later beef cattle. Merlin enjoyed the outdoors and had a passion for Oliver tractors. Merlin was a member of St. John’s Catholic Church, where he was active in church activities. He was a member of the Catholic Order of Foresters.

Merlin is survived by his wife: Rose Rilling, Fort Atkinson, IA. Two daughters: Eileen (Steve) Hageman, Solon, IA and Kathleen Pavon, Indianapolis, IN. Two sons: Kenneth Rilling, Fort Atkinson, IA and Eugene (Donna) Rilling, Tama, IA. Three grandchildren: Holly (Derek) Flynn, Cedar Rapids; Christa Hageman, Coralville; and Chad Hageman, Ames. One sister: Darlyne Hackman, Decorah, IA. Four sisters-in-law: LaVina Rilling, La Mesa, CA; Therese Schmitt, Fort Atkinson, IA; Cordula Doucet, LaCrosse, WI; Madonna Schmitt, Fort Atkinson, IA. One brother-in-law: Wilfred Dietzenbach, New Hampton, IA.

Merlin was preceded in death by his parents: Chris and Rose Rilling; two brothers: Glenn Rilling and Dean Rilling; one sister: Jeanette Schmitt; eight brothers-in-law: Leo Schmitt, Jerome Hackman; Jacob Busta, John E. Schmitt; Roman Schmitt; Alfred Schmitt; Jim Schaefer; and Joe Doucet; and five sisters-in-law: Rosemary (Rosie) Rilling, Coletta Busta, Leona Dietzenbach, Theola Schaefer, and Rita Schmitt.
