Syver Ramstad, age 81, of Decorah, IA, died Friday, July 9, 2010, at Wellington Place Nursing Home in Decorah, IA.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m., Monday, July 12, 2010, at the Decorah Lutheran Church, Decorah, Iowa, with Rev. Bryan Robertson and Rev. Wayne Hagen presiding. Burial will be in St. Peter’s Lutheran Cemetery, Eldorado, Iowa.
Friends may call from 2:00-5:00 p.m. on Sunday, at the Schluter – Balik Funeral Home in Decorah and also after 10:00 a.m. on Monday at the church.
Syver Orlando Ramstad was born on September 1, 1928, the son of John Nicholas and Solveig (Warhuus) Ramstad in Decorah, Iowa. Syver was baptized and confirmed at the First Lutheran Church in Decorah. He attended rural country schools in Allamakee and Winneshiek Counties. Syver worked for Bolson Feeds, the City of Decorah, and for forty-three years for Winneshiek County, retiring in 1993 as the Maintenance Superintendent. Syver married Nina Odella Skaim on June 1, 1947, at the Decorah Lutheran Church. Syver enjoyed fishing and camping at the Mississippi and going to Canada with Nina to fish for many years. He also liked to repair tractors and cars, maintain his flower beds and yard, and to help others. Above all, Syver loved his family and grandchildren. Syver was a member of the Decorah Lutheran Church and the I.O.O.F. Lodge.
Syver is survived by his three children: Carol (Ken) Moore, Blue Earth, MN; John (Jackie) Ramstad, Decorah, IA and Larry Ramstad, Decorah, IA. Nine grandchildren: Polly Lasley, David (Darcy) Stoen, Kim (Jon) Weber, Anthony Franzen, Michele (Charles) Cliff, Melissa (Mike) Plank, Braden Ramstad, Troy (Renee) Ramstad; Nicole (Barrett) McCasland. Nineteen great grandchildren: Ken Patten, Ashley, Thommy & Cameron Lasley, Ethan and Katelyn Stoen; Cory, Courtney, Madeline, and Nina Weber; Tyler, Karly and Katelyn Ramstad; Luke & Larra McCasland; Ashley & Charles Cliff, Jr., Meagan Burton and Devin Plank. One half-brother: Harold (Verna) Lee, Decorah, IA. Two half-sisters: Ellen (Chet) Bogucki, Remer, MN, and Solveig Steine, Winona, MN. Four sisters-in-law: Virginia Skaim, Whittier, CA, Shirley Gray, Mauston, WI, Linda (Paul) Rauter, Osseo, WI, and Karen Lee, Decorah, IA. One brother-in-law: Don Buhr, Decorah, IA, along with numerous nieces and nephews.
Syver was preceded in death by his parents: John Nicholas and Solveig (Wahuus) Ramstead. His wife: Nina Ramstad on January 16, 2002. His daughter-in-law: Janice Ramstad on May 19, 2008. One great grandson: Zachary. One half-brother: Mel Lee on Dec. 15, 2009. One sister-in- law: Joan Buhr and two brothers-in-law: Leonard Skaim and Gerald Gray.
