Margaret Emma (Grube) Phelps passed away on June 6, 2006 in Moses Lake, WA.

Margaret was born the youngest of eight children to John and Emma Grube of Cresco, IA.

She began her retail sales career after high school graduation when she went to work for George Laub’s Ready to Wear in Cresco. While working for the Laub family she met her husband, Cleveland Phelps, the Railroad Express agent in Cresco.

Margaret and Cleveland were married May 3, 1941 at the Little Brown Church in the Vale, Nashua, IA. They had a daughter, Mary Jo.

Many will remember Margaret for her many years in retail sales in Decorah. She and Cleveland operated Phelps Market on the west side for twenty-six year. After their retirement, Margaret went to work for Ted’s Tobacco Shop and later for Rambo’s Pharmacy. She retired from Rambo’s at the age of eighty-three.

She played bridge with close friends for many years. She was instrumental in starting up the Decorah Ya-tan-yee unit as well as being a Lady Elk, a member of a Decorah Hospital unit, a past Rebecca Lodge officer and a member of the Methodist Church.

Margaret was preceded in passing by her parents and siblings, and her devoted husband, Cleveland.

She was survived by her daughter, Mary Jo (Keith) McKinney; grandchildren, Kyle (Sonya) Anderson, Richard Anderson, and Decorah Curran; three great-grandchildren, Chante, Travis and Mikayla.

Interment will be at the New Hampton Cemetery next to her husband. A private family service was held. Her family would like to share this prayer that she carried in her wallet for many years:

“Our father in heaven we thank thee for this opportunity to meet together; for the love that unites us; for the beauty, for the work and for the bright skies above us, that make our lives delightful. Give us courage, gaiety and quick minds. Amen.”
