Lyle Ottney, age 71, of Decorah, Iowa, died on Monday, June 1, 2009, at his home.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m., on Friday, June 5, 2009, at the Canoe Ridge Lutheran Church, rural Decorah, Iowa, with Rev. Doug Mathison officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
Friends may call from 3:00-6:00 p.m. on Thursday at the Schluter – Balik Funeral Home and also after 10:00 a.m. at the church on Friday morning.
Lyle Henry Ottney was born on October 22, 1937, the son of Leonard Edward and Hazel Ione (Forde) Ottney, near Decorah, Iowa. Lyle was baptized on June 4, 1939, and confirmed on May 6, 1951, in his faith. Lyle attended rural Winneshiek County country school and graduated from Decorah High School in 1956. Lyle entered the US Army and served from July 17, 1959 to August 8, 1979. Lyle served two tours in Viet Nam with the First Calvary Davison. Lyle married Bea Bauermeister on September 14, 1972 in Mainz, Germany and to this union, one son was born: Edwin. Lyle worked and lived in Germany for many years, until he returned to Decorah in 1998. Lyle enjoyed playing cards and coin collecting. Lyle was an active member of the Canoe Ridge Lutheran Church.
Lyle’s survivors include his son: Edwin (Michelle) Ottney, Puyallup, WA. Two granddaughters: Diana and Chela. Two sisters: Nina (Jim) LaPorte, Edinburg, TX and Marvel Tomczak, Jefferson, WI. One brother: Ed (Lori) Ottney, Decorah, IA, along with many nieces, nephews and great nieces and nephews.
Lyle was preceded in death by his parents: Leonard E. Ottney on April 26, 1969 and Hazel Ottney Smorstad on November 11, 2008. His wife: Beate Ottney on July 29, 1996. One sister: Donna Forde from complications of polio in 1960.
