Ruth M. Olson, age 79, of Decorah, Iowa, died Monday, July 21, 2008 at Wellington Place in Decorah of complications from cancer.
Memorial Services will be held at 11:00 A.M. Thursday, July 24, 2008 at First Lutheran Church in Decorah by Rev. Steven M. Jacobsen with inurnment in Lutheran Cemetery in Decorah.
Friends may call after 10:00 A.M. on Thursday, one hour before services, at First Lutheran Church. Fjelstul Funeral Home in Decorah is handling the arrangements.
Ruth Minna (Meyer) Olson was born May 5, 1929 in New Albin, Iowa, the daughter of Paul H. and Alma Ann (Meyer) Meyer. She was baptized and confirmed at St. Peter’s Church in New Albin, IA. She was confirmed as an adult at First Lutheran Church in Decorah in October of 1962. Ruth graduated from New Albin High School with the class of 1946.
She was united in marriage to Lester R. Olson on September 30, 1961 at St. Peter’s Lutheran Church in New Albin, IA. This union was blessed with two children: Joan and Alan.
Ruth worked as a beautician in Decorah for fourteen years, then was a stay-at-home mom for fifteen years and, finally, served as Coordinator of Student Employment with Dining Services at Luther College for 16 years.
She was a very active member of First Lutheran Church in Decorah. She was very involved with the food pantry, served on the Social Concerns Committee from 1996 to 2005, and as a deaconess.
Ruth became a resident of Wellington Place on May 28, 2008.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her sister, Ora Ann, in infancy; her brother, Glenn Meyer; and her brother-in-law, Donald Kruse.
She is survived by her husband of more 46 years, Lester of Decorah; their two children, Joan (Louis) Kastler of Blair, NE, and Alan (Lynn) Olson of Dallas, TX; her sister, Belva Kruse of Eitzen, MN; and two grandchildren, Mitchell Allen Creamer and Samantha Ruth Creamer.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to the Food Pantry at First Lutheran Church.
