Bernice Newhouse, age 88, of Decorah, Iowa, died Thursday, April 24, 2008 at Aase Haugen Home in Decorah following a short illness.

Funeral Services will be held at 11:00 A.M. Monday, April 28, 2008 at Burr Oak Lutheran Church in Burr Oak, Iowa by Rev. Matthew Larson with burial in Burr Oak Cemetery.

Friends may call from 4:00 – 7:00 P.M. Sunday, April 27 at Fjelstul Funeral Home in Decorah and an hour prior to the services on Monday at the church.

Mina “Bernice” (Meylink) Newhouse was born December 10, 1919, in Hull, Iowa, the daughter of Berend J. and Mina Bernice (Houwers) Meylink. She was baptized at the Dutch Reformed Church in Hull, IA. Bernice attended Hull Elementary School and Hull High School. She received a two year teaching certificate from Iowa State Teachers College and taught grades 1 and 2 in Urbana, IA from 1939-1941 and then kindergarten in Rock Valley, IA.

On May 26, 1941, Bernice was united in marriage with Maynard Arnold Newhouse in her home in Hull, IA. They started farming near Burr Oak in 1946 where Bernice was busy with her household and seven children. For the past 30 years, they spent winters in Brownsville, TX.

Bernice was a member of the Burr Oak Lutheran Church and in the winters, Shepherd of the Valley Lutheran Church in Brownsville, TX, and directed choirs at both churches. She was also a member of Joan of Arc, Farm Bureau Women’s Chorus, served on the Decorah Library Board, was active with the Burr Oak Lutheran Church Women, Silver Crest Golf and Country Club and RSVP. She was a teaching substitute in the North Winneshiek school system and her love of teaching led her to do volunteer work in the Brownsville school district.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Maynard on September 1, 2000; and two brothers: Henry and William Meylink.

She is survived by her seven children: Nancy Beck of Madison, WI, Craig (Marilyn) Newhouse of Decorah, IA, Gail (Bruce) Henderson of Atlantic, IA, Faith (Dennis) Johnson of Ida Grove, IA, Jean (Arlen) Schrum of Indianola, IA, Keith (Jane) Newhouse of Rosemount, MN, Bruce Newhouse of Decorah, IA; 18 grandchildren: Susan (Mike) Bramwell, Betsy (Wade) Hanna, Ben (Becca) Newhouse, Julie (Josh) Felhofer, Barbara Newhouse (Katolo Mendamenda), Scott (Beth) Henderson, Todd Henderson (Julia Hartwig), Brad (Michelle) Henderson, Matt (Becky) Johnson, Melissa (Phillip) Jensen, Luke Johnson, Miranda Johnson, Katie, Christy and Beth Schrum, Justine and Nancy Newhouse, Maynard Newhouse; nine great grandchildren: Abby and Gavin Bramwell, Martin Hanna, Benson and Beau Newhouse, Haley and Torren Johnson, Evan and Anabel Jensen; one sister-in-law, Verna Simenson of Neenah, WI.
