Jerry Neubauer, age 82, of Decorah, Iowa, died on Tuesday, July 8, 2008, at the Gundersen Lutheran Hospital in LaCrosse, WI, following a lingering illness.
A Memorial Mass will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, July 12, 2008, at St. Benedict’s Catholic Church in Decorah, Iowa, with Rev. Phillip Gibbs officiating. There will be no visitation. The Schluter – Balik Funeral Home in Decorah, Iowa is in charge of arrangements.
Gerald “Jerry” Francis Neubauer was born on October 20, 1925, the son of Jerry and Clara (Balk) Neubauer in Bluffton Township, rural Decorah, Iowa. Jerry attended country school for one year and Assumption Catholic School in Cresco, Iowa. He farmed with his father until he married Shirlee Hovden on May 22, 1950 at the Assumption Catholic Church in Cresco, Iowa. Together they farmed for forty-eight years, retiring in 1998. While Jerry farmed he also worked for a few years at Farm Service in Mabel, MN and at Sale Barns in Cresco, Decorah and Lime Springs, Iowa. In his younger days, Jerry played the accordion in the “Little Vince” band. Jerry loved horses, coon hunting and his children and grandchildren. Jerry served as a director for the Northeast Iowa Quarter Horse Assn. and helped to found the Cresco Saddle Club. Jerry was a horse showman and raised registered Quarter and Paint horses for many years. Jerry was a member of St. Benedict’s Catholic Church and the Winn. Co. Saddle Club.
Jerry’s survivors include his wife: Shirlee Neubauer, Decorah, IA. Two daughters: Sheela (Wayne) Marks, New Hope, MN and Lisa (Randy) Tangen, Decorah, IA. Seven grandchildren: Keisha (David) Sandberg, Elk River, MN; Shawna (Michael) Bipes, Mora, MN; Shannon Marks, Plymouth, MN; Andrew Marks, Crystal, MN; Justin Neubauer, Decorah, IA; Rachel and Breanna Tangen, both of Decorah, IA. Two great grandchildren: Lauren and Joshua Sandberg. One brother: Donald (Bonnie) Neubauer, Cresco, IA. Two sisters-in-law: Rosemary Vopava, Ridgeway, IA and Janet Neubauer, Cresco, IA. Four brothers-in-law: Virgil Hovden, Waucoma, IA; Roger (Carmen) Hovden, Ridgeway, IA; Gene McCormick, Cresco, IA; Daryl Lusson, Forest City, IA and many nieces and nephews.
Jerry was preceded in death by his parents: Jerry and Clara Neubauer. His son: Jayme Neubauer on Oct. 1, 1993. One sister: Betty Lusson. One brother: Zach Neubauer. Jerry’s father and mother-in-law: Kenneth & Olga Hovden. Three sisters-in-law: Lila McCormick, Janet Fisher and Helen Hovden. Two brothers-in-law: Arlin Fisher and Joe Vopava.
