Loyal D. Nelson, age 61, of Rochester, MN, died Sunday, March 15, 2009 at his home of a sudden illness.

Funeral Services will be held at 11:00 A.M. Saturday, March 21, 2009 at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in Decorah, IA by Rev. Joan A. Mau and Rev. Owen Christianson.

Visitation will be on Saturday, March 21 after 10:00 A.M., one hour before services, at the church. Fjelstul Funeral Home in Decorah is handling the arrangements.

Loyal Dean Nelson was born on October 11, 1947 in Minneapolis, Minnesota the son of Ardath Loyal and Thelma Astrid (Opheim) Nelson. Loyal was baptized, attended Sunday school, sang in a youth choir, and was confirmed at Zion Lutheran Church in Minneapolis, Minnesota. He graduated from Patrick Henry High School with the class of 1965 and the University of Minnesota where he majored in Japanese and continued graduate work in Asian History. He worked and lived in Japan for 20 years. Most recently he was working for Target Corporation in Rochester, Minnesota.

Loyal was an active community volunteer his whole life. He was on the Board of Directors of the Olmsted County Democrats, he was on the Board of Directors of the Zumbro Valley Mental Health Center, he was Commissioner and Treasurer of the Rochester Human Rights Commission, a member of Senior Corps of Retired Executives, Toastmasters, the Rotary Club and Amnesty International of Japan.

He had a good sense of humor and a keen interest in history and politics. All who knew him appreciated his gentle manner and wise counsel and he will be sorely missed by family and friends.

He was preceded in death by his father, Ardath, on July 31, 2004.

Loyal is survived by two sons: Loyal Shin of Schaumburg, IL and Leif Con of Columbia, MO; his mother, Thelma Nelson of Decorah, IA; two sisters: Marilyn (Loyal) Rue of Decorah, IA and Cynthia (Gerald) Anderson of Tacoma, WA; his former wife, Tomoko Meshino of Osaka, Japan; two aunts: Yzetta Nelson of Minneapolis, MN and Hilda Halvorson of Bagley, MN; several cousins; five nieces and nephews; and many friends.
