Dr. Frank F. Nelson, age 84, of Decorah, IA, died Wednesday morning, October 6, 2010 at Winneshiek Medical Center in Decorah.

Memorial Services will be held at 1:30 P.M. Saturday, October 9, 2010 at First Lutheran Church in Decorah with Rev. Marion Pruitt-Jefferson and Rev. Harris Hostager officiating. Inurnment will be in Lutheran Cemetery in Decorah.

Visitation will be from 4:00-7:00 P.M. Friday, October 8, 2010 at Fjelstul Funeral Home in Decorah and on Saturday one hour before the service at the church.

Frank Frederick Nelson was born December 9, 1925 in Kenosha, Wisconsin. He graduated from Kenosha High School with the class of 1943. He attended the University of Wisconsin and also its Medical School. He started his medical career in Colby, Wisconsin as a general practitioner.

Frank was united in marriage to Betty Jean K. Bender on October 25, 1952 at the United Methodist Church in Colby, WI. This union was blessed with two children: Philip and Mark.

Frank started his radiology training in New York City for one year’s training and then was inducted into the U.S. Air Force on July 17, 1954. He served as a radiologist at Griffiss Air Force Base in Rome, New York for two years and was honorably discharged on July 16, 1956. After his service, he returned to New York City for three more years of radiology training. He then practiced radiology for three-and-a-half years in New Ulm, Minnesota. In 1963 he moved to Decorah and practiced radiology here as well as in Cresco, Waukon and around Northeastern Iowa and Southern Minnesota for 18 years, retiring at the age of 65.

He was a member of First Lutheran Church where he sang in the choir and was president of the congregation when the church was set on fire in 1975. He belonged to Oneota Golf & Country Club. Frank loved to play bridge, liked camping with his family and enjoyed reading.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and one son, Mark W. Nelson on July 19, 2005.

Frank is survived by his wife, Betty Jean of Decorah; one son, Philip (Jerilyn) Nelson of Waterloo, IA; his twin sisters: Barbara Bottger of Milwaukee, WI and Phyllis Latimer of Ashville, NC; and his sister-in-law, Barbara Schmidtbauer of Tomahawk, WI.

Fjelstul Funeral Home in Decorah is serving the family.
