Thelma Moen, age 89, of Decorah, Iowa, died on Sunday, August 29, 2010, at the Aase Haugen Nursing Home in Decorah.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m., Wednesday, September 1, 2010, at the Washington Prairie Lutheran Church, rural Decorah, Iowa, with Rev. Mark Kvale presiding. Burial will be in the Glenwood Cemetery, rural Decorah, Iowa.
Friends may call from 4:00-7:00 p.m., on Tuesday at the Schluter – Balik Funeral Home in Decorah and also after 10:00 a.m. at the church on Wednesday morning.
Thelma Marvel (Lovstuen) Moen was born on January 31, 1921 the daughter of Nels and Hilda (Hagen) Lovstuen in Glenwood Township. Thelma attended country school in the Glenwood area and graduated from Decorah High School in 1938. Thelma married Leo Moen on December 27, 1938 at the Glenwood Lutheran Parsonage. Together they farmed in the Washington Prairie area until they retired in 1974, and moved into Decorah. Thelma was a very talented china painter and worked at the Luther College Bookstore. She was a member of the Glenwood Lutheran in her younger days and currently the Washington Prairie Lutheran Church, where she taught Sunday School, along with being active in the W/ELCA. Above all, Thelma was a very loving wife, mother and grandmother, she will be dearly missed.
Thelma is survived by one daughter: LaVonne Bjergum, Decorah, IA. Two sons: Duane “Bud” (Ann) Moen, Decorah, IA and Lyle (Nancy Rash) Moen, Washington, IA. Seven grandchildren: Lloyd (Irene) Bjergum, Jeanne (Bob) Mulder, Alice Bjergum, Ronald (Kathy) Moen, Wendy Moen, Kimberly (Stan) Pauls, and Richard (Sara) Moen. Nine great grandchildren: Greg, Jessica, Jacob and Samantha Mulder; Katie and Lacie Bjergum; Jonathan Morris, Abigail “Abby” and Morgan Moen. One brother: Alton (Rosemary) Lovstuen, Cedar Rapids, IA. Five sisters-in-law: Mila Mae Lovstuen, Decorah, IA; Velva Lovstuen, Mabel, MN; Ruth Moen, Cedar Rapids, IA; Marcie Opfer, Waukon, IA; and Jean Colburn, Poulsbo, WA. Two brothers-in-law: Walter K. “Bob” (Nina) Moen, Henderson, NE and Roger Bacon, Mabel, MN, along with many nieces, nephews and friends.
Thelma was preceded in death by her parents: Nels and Hilda (Hagen) Lovstuen. Her husband: Leo Moen on Feb. 9, 2008. One daughter in infancy: Darlene Moen in 1941. One son-in-law: Roger Bjergum. Three brothers: Alert, Norton (Luella), and Milton Lovstuen and one sister: Martha (Merlin) Moe. Five brothers-in-law: Willie Moen, Jim Opfer, Russ Colburn, and Elmer (Marie) Moen and Hjalmar (Gladys) Kolseth. Four sisters-in-law: Angie Bacon, Agnes (Edwin) Ginapp, Amy (Harvey) Buddenberg and Lillian (Earle) Maples.
