Ruth Johnson Moen, age 93, of Cedar Rapids, IA, formerly of Decorah, IA, died Wednesday, October 26, 2011, at St Lukes Hospital in Cedar Rapids after a short illness.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, October 29, 2011, at the Glenwood Lutheran Church, 1197 Old Stage Road, with Rev. Dr. T. Edwards Breed presiding. Burial will be in the Glenwood Cemetery.

Friends may call from 5:00-7:00 p.m., on Friday at the Schluter – Balik Funeral Home in Decorah, IA, and also after 10:00 a.m., at the church on Saturday morning.

Ruth Arlene (Johnson) Moen was born September 12, 1918, in Decorah, IA, the daughter of John and Marie (Nessett) Johnson. She attended Bakke Country School. She later married Willie F. Moen on February 7, 1937, at the Glenwood Lutheran Church in Decorah. She was a member of the Glenwood church until 1954. The couple farmed in Glenwood Township for 18 years, before moving to Cedar Rapids in 1954. Ruth worked at Albert’s Furrier for four years. In 1964, she went to work for Collins Radio retiring in 1972. In 1971, the couple purchased a lake front home near Northome, MN. All of the grandchildren have years of fond memories of time spent at the lake. They spent winters in Phoenix AZ and also Merritt Island, FL from 1975-1985. Ruth was a member of St. Andrews Lutheran Church in Cedar Rapids for many years. She was a very caring wife and mother. She enjoyed needlework, quilting, and was an avid reader. She also enjoyed fishing, water aerobics, dominos and making lefse.

Ruth’s survivors include her three daughters: Janet Brooks (Spencer) of Bennington, NE, Karen (Bev) Taylor of Cedar Rapids, IA, and Sharen Moen of Cedar Rapids, IA. Nine grandchildren: Jody Clausen, Julie Brooks, Jennifer (Mitchell) Moe, Wesley James Taylor, Harvey Miskimen, Mike (Candy) Miskimen, Ronda (Ken) Ridley, Lynette (Lynn) Rowan and Vicki Miskimen. Seventeen great grandchildren: Jason (Sandy) Brooks, Brandon (Brittany) Clausen, Jessica (Mike) Nebbia, Neil Brooks, Spencer Leonard, Jessica Miskimen, Joy Miskimen, Christopher Miskimen, Christina Ridley, Matthew Ridley, Kelsey Ridley, Jeremy Downes, Elizabeth Downes, Emily Downes, Amanda Miskimen, Zachary Symonds, and Madeline Moe. Four great great grandchildren: Dillon Brooks, Brooke & Bradley Clausen & Jaydon Miskimen. One sister-in-law: Marcella “Marcie” Opfer, Waukon, IA. Two brothers-in-law: Bob (Nina) Moen, Henderson, NV and Roger Bacon, Mabel, MN.

Ruth was preceded in death by her parents: John and Marie Johnson. Her husband: Willie, (after 64 years of marriage) on Oct. 24, 2001. One great granddaughter: Courtney Miskimen. One sister: Ellen (Don) Rodenkirk. Two brothers: Arthur (Ruth) Johnson and Arnold (Jean) Johnson. Three brothers-in-law: Elmer (Marie) Moen, Jim Opfer, and Leo (Thelma) Moen. Six sisters-in-law: Lillian (Earle) Maples, Amy (Harvey) Buddenberg, Agnes (Edwin) Ginapp, Jean (Russell) Colburn, Angie Bacon and Gladys (Hjalmer) Kolseth.
