Marian Miller, age 93, of West Union, IA, died on Saturday, April 7, 2012, at Traditions in West Union, Iowa.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m., Tuesday, April 10, 2012, at the Calmar Community United Methodist Church, 208 West Main St, Calmar, IA, with Rev. Linda Thompson presiding. Burial will be in the Calmar City Cemetery, Calmar, IA.
Friends may call from 4:00-6:00 p.m., on Monday, at the Schluter – Balik Funeral Home, French Chapel, 202 South Washington Street, Calmar, IA.
In lieu of flowers, the family wishes to have memorials given in memory of Marian, to the Calmar Public Library, 101 South Washington Street, Calmar, IA, 52132.
Marian Elizabeth (Miner) Miller was born on October 6, 1918, the daughter of Albert Burns and Ann Lee (Dilworth) Miner, near Table Grove, Illinois. She spent her childhood there and attended a rural one-room school house. She graduated from Knox College in Galesburg, IL, and served in the Red Cross during World War II. She attended graduate school at the University of Chicago and then transferred to the University of Minnesota where she graduated with an M.A. in Medical Social Work. She met her future husband, Garfield Miller, while at the University of Minnesota. They were married on August 20, 1949, at the Table Grove Community Church in Table Grove, IL. She accompanied her husband as he completed his M.D. degree in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, and his internship in Detroit, Michigan. In 1953, she moved to Calmar with Dr. Miller as he established a 35-year medical practice and they established their family home. Marian and Dr. Miller lived in Calmar for the next 55 years. Marian’s community involvement included serving as a Girl Scout leader, volunteering for various health organizations, and helping to sponsor the first rural mental health center in northeast Iowa. In addition, Marian was a member of the Winneshiek County Medical Center Hospital Auxiliary Scholarship Committee. She was an active member of the Calmar Community Methodist Church and its women’s group, the United Methodist Women. She was a member of the Calmar Library Board for forty-one years and South Winneshiek School Board for nine years, serving as president of the school board for three years. In 1992, Marian was inducted into the Iowa Hall of Fame by Governor Terry Branstad to honor her for her volunteer work. Marian was awarded the Knox College Scroll of Honor in 1995 for “lifetime achievements of personal worth and service to others.”
Marian is survived by her three children: Catherine (Paul) Sue Anderson, Green Valley, AZ; Gary (Lisa) Miller, Kansas City, MO; and George (Janet) Miller, Hastings, MN. Six grandchildren and three nephews. One sister: Dr. Ruth (Abbas) Miner-Kessel of Whitewater, WI.
Marian was preceded in death by her father and mother, Albert and Anna Lee Miner of Vermont, IL. Her husband: Dr. Garfield Miller of Calmar, IA, on Oct. 18, 2010. One brother: Dr. William (Mary) Miner of Charleston, IL. Her father and mother-in-law: George and Katherine (Ballensky) Miller. Daughter-in-law Diane Miller
