Grace Lien, age 99, of Decorah, Iowa, died on Tuesday, September 19, 2006, at the Barthell Eastern Star Home, in Decorah, Iowa, following a lingering illness.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m., Saturday, September 23, 2006, at the Springfield Lutheran Church, Decorah, Iowa, with Rev. Norman Bauer officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
Friends may call from 4:00-8:00 p.m. on Friday at the Schluter – Balik Funeral Home, in Decorah and after 9:30 a.m. at the church on Saturday morning.
Grace Olina (Borness) Lien was born on July 20, 1907, the daughter of Engvold and Cecelia (Thorbjornson) Borness in Springfield Township, rural Decorah, Iowa. Grace was baptized on August 16, 1907 at the North Washington Prairie Lutheran Church by Rev. Bakken and was confirmed on October 23, 1921 at the Ossian Lutheran Church, by Rev. Kvamme. Grace attended the Lee Country School near Ossian, Iowa. She worked as a hired girl for Decorah families. Grace married Elmer Lien on June 4, 1931 at the Washington Prairie Lutheran Church. Together they farmed the Lien home place, then moved south of Ossian and then back to the Lien farm. In 1957, they moved to the Springfield Parsonage for two years and then to Ossian, to take care of her father. In 1995, she moved into Independent Living at the Eastern Star and into the nursing home in 2003. Grace enjoyed sewing, cooking, quilting, and making lefsa and cookies for her grandchildren. She also strived to keep traditions alive and ongoing in her family and was very patriotic. Grace was a member of the Springfield Lutheran Church, where she was a Sunday school teacher; WELCA, where she held offices, and the World War One Ladies Auxiliary, RSVP and the Sons of Norway.
Grace’s survivors include her three daughters: Viola (Conley) Linderbaum, Ossian, IA; Celia (Harold) Stoen, Highlandville, IA and Helen (Dean) Thune, Davenport, IA. Three sons: Ray (Aurora) Lien, Orlando, FL; Robert (Marlys) Lien, Decorah, IA and Harold (Janice) Lien, Rochester, MN. One sister: Mildred Johnson, Clermont, IA and one brother: Einar (Jenny) Borness, Mesa, AZ. Nineteen grandchildren: Charles (Becky) Lien, Brian (Tracy) Lien, Julie (Mike) Menchen, Dennis (Eileen) Linderbaum, Dianne (Dave) Ameling, Elayne (Pastor Dave) Werges, Edward Stoen, Laurel (Pastor Kip) Groettum, Gary (Patty) Lien, Scott (Sally) Lien, Kristen (Pam) Lien, David Thune, Eric (Patty) Thune, Randy (Robin) Thune, Daniel (Timi) Thune, Renee (Jim) Taubel, Jeff (Sue) Lien, Tim (Janet) Lien and Heidi (Brian) Bahr. Five Step-Grandchildren; thirty-three great grandchildren; two great great grandsons; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
Grace was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Elmer in 1983; one brother: Oscar in 1922; one granddaughter: Deb Lien Rausch in 1993; four sisters: Cecelia in infancy in 1909, twins: Myrtle and Mildred in 1917, and Signe Ehler in 1991; one brother: George Borness in 1977; and two brothers-in-law: Harry Johnson in 1998 and Bernard Ehler in 1980.
