Gladys M. Lien, age 94, of Decorah, Iowa died on Thursday, February 2, 2006 at the Aase Haugen Nursing Home in Decorah, Iowa following a short illness.
Funeral services will be held on Monday, February 6, 2006 at 11:00 a.m. at the Springfield Lutheran Church, rural Decorah, Iowa with Rev. Norm Bauer officiating. Burial will be in the Springfield Cemetery.
Friends may call from 3:00-7:00 p.m. Sunday at the Schluter – Balik Funeral Home, Decorah and after 10:00 a.m. at the church on Monday morning.
Gladys Myrtle Lien was born on June 2, 1911 the daughter of Anton and Anna (Halverson) Hogenson on the family farm in Springfield Township, rural Decorah, Iowa. Gladys was baptized on June 13, 1911 and confirmed on July 5, 1925 at the Springfield Lutheran Church. Gladys attended country school in Springfield Township. She married Carl M. Lien on May 23, 1932 at the Springfield Lutheran Church. Together they farmed in Springfield Township until Carl died in 1977, then she moved to Milfred and Joan’s home in Decorah. Gladys enjoyed working in the garden, doing fieldwork in her younger days, sewing, making quilts, baking, making scrapbooks and photo albums and telling jokes. Gladys enjoyed playing cards and was a member of Four Queens Card Club, Good Neighbors Club and R.S.V.P. Volunteers. Gladys enjoyed being with her family, grand children, great-grand children, friends and neighbors. She was a life-long member of the Springfield Lutheran Church and WELCA, where she held many offices. She also attended every Mother-Daughter Banquet at Springfield Lutheran Church for the last 48 years.
Gladys is survived by her two daughters: E. Joan Nelson & husband Milfred, Decorah, IA and Lona Mae Anderson & husband Bob, Decorah, IA. One son: David Lien & wife Patricia, Decorah, IA. Seven grandchildren: Michael Nelson, Mark Nelson & wife Cathy, Ronald Nelson & wife Becka, Dr. Stephen Anderson, James Anderson, Chad Lien & wife Shelly and Kris Lien. Two great grandchildren: Adam and Brittany Nelson. One brother: Edward Hogenson & wife Evelyn and one sister-in-law: Arlene Hogenson, all of Decorah, Iowa and several nieces and nephews.
Gladys was preceded in death by her parents; her husband: Carl in 1977; one sister: Margaret Hogenson Wold in 1991; four brothers: Clarence Hogenson in 1949; Elmer Hogenson in 1992; and Arnold Hogenson in 2004; and Thomas Hogenson in infancy. One sister-in-law: Olga Hogenson and one brother-in-law: Vernon Wold.
