OBITUARY - MARTHA ERICKSON BLAGEN

Mrs. Martin Blagen, a beloved pioneer Winneshiek County Mother, who had been a resident of Decorah for twelve years passed away on Saturday evening, June 21, at her home 606 Heivley Street. Heart failure was the immediate cause of her death, having been in poor health for several years.

Martha Erickson was a daughter of Jens and Ingeborg Erickson Ness and was born in Haukendalen Norway Aug 15, 1853. When a child she came to America with her parents in 1854, direct to Winneshiek County, the family settling in Canoe Township. She attended the county schools and grew to womanhood, and on July 29 1876 was united in marriage to Martin A Blagen, the marriage taking place at the Big Canoe Church. The family home was in Canoe and Pleasant Townships until twelve years ago when the deceased came to Decorah to reside. Her husband passed away 17 years ago. Five children were born to the union, two of whom died in infancy. The surviving children are Alfred Blagen, Ida (Mrs. Hildor Egge) and Emma Blagen, all of Decorah, and an adopted daughter Mrs. Mary Larson of Chicago. Six grandchildren and four great grandchildren also survive besides two sisters and one brother, Anton Erickson, Spokane, Wash., Mrs. C O Moore, Decorah, and Mrs. A P Myrah, Canoe Township.

Mrs. Blagen was a woman beloved and highly esteemed in a large circle of Friends. She was a good wife and mother and always radiated sunshine and happiness on those about her. She will be greatly missed and mourned by her children, relatives and friends, and the sympathy of all is extended to the bereaved ones in their loss.

The deceased was a devoted member of the F.N.E.L. Church of Decorah and formerly of the Canoe Ridge Church. The funeral services were held Wednesday at 1:30 o'clock from the home and 2:00 o'clock from the F.N.E.L Church. Rev. T A Hoff officiated and interment was in the Canoe Ridge cemetery.
