Jerome “Romy” Lensing, age 88, of Decorah, Iowa, died on Wednesday, May 3, 2006 at the Oneota Riverview Care Facility in Decorah, Iowa, following a long illness.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, May 8, 2006 at Our Lady of Seven Dolors Catholic Church in Festina, Iowa with Rev. Gary Krapfl and Monsignor Cletus Hawes officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Friends may call from 3:00-8:00 p.m. on Sunday and Monday morning until 10:30 a.m. at the Festina Parish Center in Festina, Iowa. There will be a scripture service at 4:00 p.m. and a rosary at 5:00 p.m. on Sunday. Schluter – Balik Funeral Home, French Chapel in Calmar, Iowa, is in charge of arrangements.

Jerome Henry “Romy” Lensing was born on November 11, 1917, the son of John B. and Elizabeth (Timp) Lensing in Festina, Iowa. Jerome attended St. Mary’s Catholic School in Festina and helped at his family’s General Store. Jerome married Oda T. Holthaus on Sept. 24, 1940 at Our Lady of Seven Dolors in Festina. In early years, Romy ran an auto repair shop in Festina; the Festina Standard-DX Station and bulk gas delivery; Festina Auto Sales and ran a local school bus route. He also raised chickens on contract, had an egg production business, an egg sales route and sold Ful-O-Pep Feeds. In 1978, they moved to Decorah, where he operated Lensing Auto Sales and the first self-serve gas station in Iowa. Romy retired in 1980, and enjoyed spending winters in Arizona, traveling, reading, playing the guitar, flying his plane, woodworking and cars. He also enjoyed golfing and watching the professional golf tours.

Jerome’s survivors include his wife, Oda Lensing, Decorah, IA. Nine sons: Terry (Shirley) Lensing, Madison, WI; Dean Lensing, Milwaukee, WI; Donnie (Mary Lou) Lensing, Decorah, IA; Carol (Judy) Lensing, Decorah, IA; Marcellus “Buzz” (Peggy) Lensing, Decorah, IA; Jerome (Marilyn) Lensing, Jr., Davenport, IA; Gerard “Tubby” (Christi) Lensing, Tucson, AZ; Bill Lensing, Tucson, AZ and Chuck Lensing, Decorah, IA. Two daughters: Mary Ann (Terry) Wenthold, Fort Atkinson, IA and Annie (Bob) Price, Tucson, AZ. One daughter-in-law: Doris Lensing, Festina, IA. Thirty-one grandchildren: Jeff (Cathy) Lensing, Chris (Tammy) Lensing, Cory Lensing & Andy (Kristi) Lensing; Faith (Jim) Gribben, Hope (Shawn) Breitsprecher, Martin (Lisa) Lensing, Charity (Jeff) Kuboushek & Peter (fiancé, Shannon) Lensing; Elizabeth (Jeremia) Goldberger & Amy Lensing; Jennifer (Charles) Jenkins, Holly (Jeremy) Olsgard & Ben Lensing; Eric (Amy) Lensing & Jason (Cheri) Lensing; Patrick Lensing & Mindy (fiancé, Bill) Lensing; Nathan & Katie Lensing; Joel (Trisha) Wenthold, Ryan (Amy) Wenthold, Jacob & Terra Wenthold; Nicole, Danielle & Tanner Lensing; Tasha (Chad) Geyer & Benea Price; Brelynn & Bryce Lensing. Three brothers: Greg (Arvella) Lensing, Davenport, IA; Ralph (Corrine) Lensing, Festina, IA and Gerald “Jerry” (Debbie) Lensing, Kouderay, WI. One sister: Lucille (Norman) Folker, Oconomowoc, WI.

Jerome was preceded in death by his father: John B. Lensing in 1968; his mother: Elizabeth Lensing in 1981; one daughter: Susan Lensing on Sept. 21, 1970; one son: Robert “Petey” Lensing on Jan. 12, 2004; one great grandson: Nathan Ray Lensing; one sister: Lydia Maher and one brother: Linus Lensing.
