Julian Kuhn, age 71, of Fort Atkinson, Iowa, passed away peacefully on March 23, 2009, in his home, surrounded by his family, after courageously battling cancer for over two years.
Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, March 26, 2009, at St. John’s Catholic Church in Fort Atkinson, Iowa, with Rev. David Beckman officiating. Burial will be in St. John’s Catholic Cemetery in Fort Atkinson, Iowa.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given in memory of Julian to St. John’s Catholic Church, Trinity Catholic School, Catholic Charities and Loras College or Mount Mercy Colleges.
Friends may call from 3:00-7:00 p.m. on Wednesday at the Schluter – Balik Funeral Home, Chekal Chapel in Fort Atkinson. There will be a rosary at 4:00 p.m. and a scripture service at 5:00 p.m. on Wednesday.
Julian Joseph Kuhn was born on May 29, 1937, the son of Adolph and Gertrude (Tupy) Kuhn in Cresco, Iowa. Julian attended St. John’s Catholic School and graduated from Fort Atkinson High School in 1955. Julian married Virginia Langreck on June 28, 1960, at St. Luke’s Catholic Church in St. Lucas, Iowa. Together they operated the family farm near Fort Atkinson, until Julian retired in 1997. Julian was an active collector, poultry breeder, nature lover, supporter of Catholic education, and wildlife preservation. He sold seed products for Funk’s and CIBA, and served on the Winneshiek County Conservation Board for ten years. Julian was a member of St. John’s Catholic Church and the Knights of Columbus, Protivin Council.
Julian’s survived by his wife: Virginia Kuhn, Ft. Atkinson, IA of forty-eight years, and their four children: Nancy (Robert) Upmeyer, Solon, IA; Mark (Judith) Kuhn, Auburn, IL; Carl (Michelle) Kuhn, Ft. Atkinson, IA; and Samuel (Cheryl) Kuhn, Lansing, IA. Eight grandchildren: Paul & Maria Upmeyer, Logan & Reilly Kuhn, Michael & Jacob Kuhn and Melanie & Ryan Kuhn. Julian’s brothers and sisters-in-law: Henry Langreck, West Union, IA; Marie Langreck, New Hampton, IA; Louis Langreck, West Union, IA; Clem Langreck, Lawler, IA; Agatha Busta, Lawler, IA; Lillian (Paul) Chipera, Ft. Atkinson, IA; Charles (Mildred) Langreck, West Union, IA; Margaret (Martin) Gossling, Ft. Atkinson, IA; Edna (Larry) Jirak, Lawler, IA; and Jerry (Eileen) Langreck, LaMesa, CA, along with many nieces and nephews.
Julian was preceded in death by his parents: Adolph (1963) and Gertrude (1985) Kuhn. His father and mother-in-law: John and Lena Langreck. Brothers and sisters-in-law: Beata (Ray) Schmelzer, Bernice Langreck, Verda Langreck, Stanley Busta, and Francis (Katherine) Langreck.
The family would like to extend a special thank you to all of the nurses and physicians that cared for Julian at the North Iowa Medical Center in Mason City; Mercy Medical Center in New Hampton and Winneshiek Medical Center and Hospice in Decorah.
