Kathryn Ann “Katie” Kuehner, age 66, of Decorah, Iowa, died on Monday, March 13, 2006 after a courageous battle with cancer. She was surrounded by her family in her home.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 a.m., Thursday, March 16, 2006 at St. Benedict’s Catholic Church in Decorah, Iowa by Rev. Gary Krapfl. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Friends may call from 3:00-8:00 p.m. on Wednesday, March 15th and on Thursday morning until 10:30 a.m. at the Schluter – Balik Funeral Home in Decorah. There will be a scripture service at 4:00 p.m. on Wednesday.

Katie Kuehner was born on November 28, 1939 in Decorah, Iowa the daughter of William and Tillie (Loesch) Korbel of Spillville, Iowa. Katie graduated from Calmar High School in 1957 and then worked for Bucheit Produce in Calmar. She married Duane Kuehner on April 25, 1959 at St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church in Spillville, Iowa. To this union, ten children were born and together they farmed south of Decorah. Katie was a very important part of the farm where she helped manage the farm operation and helped with the daily chores. She enjoyed gardening and tending to her flowers and was a wonderful cook. She also worked for several years at the Sunflower Daycare Center until she became ill. Katie served as financial secretary of Branch #708 Catholic Knights Insurance, based out of Milwaukee, Wisconsin. She was a member of St. Benedict’s Catholic Church and the Madonna Circle. Katie volunteered by delivering Meals on Wheels and opened her home to Nordic Fest visitors. Katie enjoyed traveling, dancing, music, playing cards, and being a part of the Red Hat Lady Society. She especially loved spending time with her family and grandchildren.

Katie’s survivors include her husband, Duane Kuehner, Decorah, IA; children: Lori (Tom) Schott, Tipton, IA; Randy (Cathy) Kuehner, Decorah, IA; Sherry Balik, Cresco, IA; Cathy (Greg) Iverson, Decorah, IA; Marty (DeAnn) Kuehner, Decorah, IA; Karin (Doug) Butikofer, LaGrange, IL; Kristie (Mark) Monroe, Phoenix, OR; Kevin (Jennifer) Kuehner, St. Peter, MN and Jason Kuehner, Madison, WI. Fourteen grandchildren: Lindsey, Adam & Kaleb Schott; Hannah Kuehner; Rachel, Melissa & Kayla Balik; Isabel & Galen Iverson; Nicholas & Amanda Kuehner; Ben & Dane Butikofer; and Jack Monroe. Her mother-in-law: Minnie Kuehner, New Hampton, IA; Brothers and sisters-in-law: Donald (Adrienne) Kuehner, Ft. Myers, FL; Wilma (Fritz) Balk, Waucoma, IA; Marvin (Sandi) Kuehner, Marshalltown, IA; Mary Ellen (Tom) Reissner, Spencer, IA and Allen (Cathy) Kuehner, Bloomington, MN and several nieces and nephews.

Katie was preceded in death by her parents: William Korbel in 1969; Tillie Korbel in 1989; Twin brothers: Donald in 1955 and Ronald in infancy; one son: Jonathan, July 7, 1978 and her father-in-law: William Kuehner in 1984.
