Gladys Gavle, 97, of Decorah, died Sunday, March 17, 2002 at the Aase Haugen Home in Decoah following a lengthy illness.

Funeral services were held Wednesday, March 20 at 11 a.m. at Canoe Ridge Lutheran Church with Rev. Susan Debner officiating.

Organist was Connie Bolson and solist David Kruse sang "Asleep in Jesus! Blessed Sleep," and congregational hymns included "Amazing Grace" and "How Great Thou Art."

Casketbearers were Tom Otteson, Mark Radtke, Richard Otteson, Lee Thompson, Larry Thompson and Leslie Thompson.

Interment was in Canoe Ridge Lutheran Cemetery in rural Decorah, and Schluter-Balik Funeral Home of Decorah handled arrangements.

Gladys Marie (Larson) Gavle was born June 1, 1904 on the Logson farm near Washington Prairie to Martin and Anna (Sorenson) Larson.

She was baptized at Decorah Lutheran Church and confirmed at Canoe Ridge Lutheran Church, and attended rural schools in Winneshiek County and then went on to Valders College and Upper Iowa University.

Gladys Larson then taught rural country school for many years in the Pleasant Township area, and on May 14, 1940 she married Everett Gavle at the Glenwood parsonage.

They lived and farmed for many years in Winneshiek County.

In later years, Gladys Gavle moved to Decorah.

She was a lifelong member of Canoe Ridge Lutheran Church and was very active in the activities of the congregation. She was active in Ladies Aid, church circle and also served as church treasurer.

Survivors include her two sisters: Arlene (Ray) Thompson and Ella Otteson both of Decorah; two brothers: Leon (Rose Marie) Larson of Rochester, Minn., and Merton (Beverly) Larson of Lakeland, Fla.; several nieces and nephews and great-nieces and nephews.

Gladys Marie (Larson) Gavle was preceded in death by her husband Everett Gavle in 1967; her parents; three brothers: Lloyd, Selmer and Arthur Gavle and four sisters: Esther Kruse, Myrtle Priebe, Violet Ramsey and Madeline Priebe.
