Cyrena K. Kinseth, age 80, of Council Bluffs, Iowa and formerly of Decorah, Iowa, died Saturday, September 5, 2009 at Mercy Hospital in Council Bluffs.
Funeral Services will be held at 11:00 A.M. Wednesday, September 9, 2009 at First Lutheran Church in Decorah by Rev. Steven M. Jacobsen and Rev. Jon Benson. Burial will be in Lutheran Cemetery in Decorah.
Visitation will be from 5:00 – 7:00 P.M. Tuesday at Fjelstul Funeral Home in Decorah, and on Wednesday one hour before the service at the church.
Cyrena Katherine (Dewaard) Kinseth was born January 4, 1929 in Renwick, IA, the daughter of Jacob A. and Marie (Edell) Dewaard. She graduated from Corwith High School in Kanawha, Iowa with the class of 1948. She received her nurse’s training at Mercy Hospital in Marshalltown, Iowa in 1950.
Cyrena was united in marriage to Kenneth L. Kinseth on March 25, 1953 at Christian Reformed Church in Kanawha, Iowa. This union was blessed with four children: Linda, Leslie, Bruce and Gary.
Until 1966 Cyrena worked as a nurse at the Belmond Clinic in Belmond, Iowa, where she met Kenneth, who was a regular blood donor there. From 1966 until 1977 Kenneth and Cyrena owned and operated the Cliff House Hotel and Restaurant in Decorah. Cyrena planned weddings and special events for customers and was known as the consummate hostess with a special knack for making all guests feel welcome. In 1977 they sold the hotel business, semi-retired, and helped their children become established in the hotel business. Cyrena was saddened to leave Decorah in the winter of 2008, which she loved so much, especially so many of the wonderful friends she had known over the years. From Decorah, Cyrena moved to Primrose Assisted Living in Council Bluffs, Iowa, one mile from Linda’s home, where she found new friends and enjoyed seeing her grandchildren and great-grandchildren regularly.
More than anything, Cyrena enjoyed spending time with her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren, as well as conversing with friends, family and almost anyone else she encountered. She especially enjoyed the time she spent gathering with her family at meals, holidays and on family vacations where she was known for her touching “long goodbyes.” From an early age, Cyrena loved entertaining company and socializing. She enjoyed playing regular games of bridge with her friends as well as sharing coffee accompanied by “a little something” (i.e., something sweet). People often said that the name “Cyrena” was fitting because her demeanor was so serene, and everyone who met her remembered her as being one of the most kind, compassionate women they had ever known.
Cyrena died on Saturday, September 5, 2009 at Mercy Hospital in Council Bluffs, Iowa, at the age of 80. She was preceded in death by her husband, Kenneth, on May 5, 2001; her parents; her sister, Geraldine Eenhuis; her brothers, Adrian Dewaard and Clarence Dewaard; her sisters-in-law: Naomi Dewaard, Marion Kinseth, Maxine Dorr, Avon Armour and Ardith Buchanan; and her brothers-in-law: George “Shorty” Eenhuis, Harm Uken, Paul Dorr, Punch Armour, Gordon Buchanan, Roger Kinseth and Larry Kinseth.
Cyrena is survived by her daughter, Linda (Keith) Skinner of Council Bluffs, Iowa; her three sons: Leslie (Alisa) Kinseth of Clear Lake, Iowa, Bruce (Lisa) Kinseth of Coralville, Iowa, and Gary (Darla) Kinseth of Mason City, Iowa; her foster son, Jack “In” (Tammy) Won of Orange County, California; her grandchildren: Aaron Mailey and Jaime Furler-Mailey and their children, Maddison Furler and Teagann Mailey; Shana Young and her children, Cyrena Young and Ryker Mason; Jason (Rachel) Mailey and their daughter, Marissa; Laura (Jason) Mayer and their children, Breanna, Adrian and Mailey Mayer; Ashley Kinseth, Benjamin Kinseth, Kelly Kinseth, Peter Kinseth, Tristan Kinseth, Kyra Kinseth and Colton Kinseth; two sisters: Anne Uken of Kanawha, Iowa and Nellie Eliason of Pella, Iowa; her sisters-in-law, Lucille Dewaard of Corwith, Iowa, Sherri Kinseth of Belmond, Iowa, and Janice Kinseth of Belmond, Iowa; her brother-in-law, Rolland Kinseth of Belmond, Iowa; and all the nieces and nephews that she truly treasured.
