Earl Kern, age 71, of Decorah, Iowa, died on Friday, October 3, 2008, at the Aase Haugen Nursing Home in Decorah, Iowa, following a short illness.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m., Tuesday, October 7, 2008, at the Decorah Lutheran Church in Decorah, Iowa, with Rev. Bryan Robertson officiating. Burial will be in the Lutheran Cemetery.

Friends may call from 4:00-7:00 p.m. on Monday at the Schluter – Balik Funeral Home in Decorah and after 10:00 a.m. at the church on Tuesday morning.

Earl Phillip Kern was born on April 22, 1937, the son of Emmons W. and Fern (Hovey) Kern, in Canoe Township, rural Decorah, Iowa. Earl was baptized and confirmed at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Locust. Earl attended the Knoke country school in Canoe Township. He became a member of Decorah Lutheran in October 1964. Earl married Rita R. Christofferson on November 6, 1964 at the Decorah Lutheran Church by Rev. Bruno Schlachtenhaufen. Earl was a life-time truck driver. Starting with can milk, grain and livestock. The last twenty-five years, he worked at Olson Explosives, hauling and using the explosives in the quarries, retiring in 1997. Earl enjoyed fishing, hunting, gardening, playing cards, dancing and trips to Branson as long as his health allowed. Earl entered the Aase Haugen Nursing Home on August 11, 2008. Earl was a member of the Decorah Lutheran Church, life member of the Northeast Iowa Fox and Coon Club, Mississippi Valley Sportsmen Club, Decorah Bank Sunrise Club and former 35 year member of the IOOF, of which he was very active during those years.

Earl’s survivors include his wife: Rita Kern, Decorah, IA.

Earl was preceded in death by his parents: Emmons and Fern Kern; an infant sister: Myrtle Lois and one brother: Wayne in 1946.
