Rita Karnik, age 85, formerly of Fort Atkinson, Iowa died on Thursday, February 16, 2006 at the NHC Nursing Home in Madisonville, Kentucky, following a long illness.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Monday, February 27, 2006 at 11:00 a.m. at St. John’s Catholic Church in Fort Atkinson, Iowa, with Rev. David Beckman and Rev. George Karnik officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Friends may call from 3:00-8:00 p.m. on Sunday, February 26, 2006, and Monday morning until 10:30 a.m. at the Schluter – Balik Funeral Home, Chekal Chapel, Fort Atkinson, Iowa. There will be a rosary at 4:00 p.m. and a scripture service at 7:00 p.m.

Rita Philomena (Perry) Kamik {sic} was born on March 17, 1920 in St. Lucas, Iowa, the daughter of Matt and Theresa (Blong) Perry. She attended St. Luke's Catholic School. Rita attended Pitz's Beauty School in Waterloo, IA and received her cosmetology certificate on August 15, 1945. She then operated a salon in her parent's home. Rita married Anthony Virgil Karnik, August 23, 1949 at St. Luke's Catholic Church in St. Lucas, IA. Together they farmed and Rita operated Rita's Beauty Shop out of her home on the farm near Fort Atkinson. She moved to a house in Fort Atkinson in 1997 and then moved to Kentucky to be near her daughter in 1999. Rita enjoyed sewing, gardening and playing the piano and organ. She was a member of St. John's Catholic Church and was a member of the choir for many years.

Rita’s survivors include one daughter: Anne Karnik-Johnson, Fairbanks, AK; One son: John Karnik & wife Karen, Alpha, IA. Three grandchildren: Kevin Karnik, Fredericksburg, IA; Brian Karnik, Cedar Rapids, IA and Ben Johnson, Lexington, KY. Two brothers: Rev. Frank Perry, Dubuque, IA and Matthew Perry & wife Sharon, Libertyville, IL; Two sisters: Marie Marek & husband Maynard, Cedar Rapids, IA and Flora McMullen & husband Pat, Vero Beach, FL.

Rita was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Anthony Karnik on January 26, 1965; her two sons: Paul Karnik on Dec. 12, 2004 and Greg Karnik on April 17, 2005; three brothers: Leo Perry in infancy, Robert “Bob” Perry and Jerome Perry.
