Esther B. Hovden, age 86, of Decorah, Iowa, died on Wednesday, May 31, 2006 at the Aase Haugen Nursing Home in Decorah, Iowa, following a short illness.
Memorial services will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, June 3, 2006 at the First Lutheran Church, Decorah, Iowa, with Rev. Steven Jacobsen officiating. Burial will be in the Lutheran Cemetery, Decorah, Iowa. Schluter – Balik Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.
Esther Bernice (Thompson) Hovden was born on January 24, 1920, in Decorah, Iowa, the daughter of Benhart Levi and Emma Katherine (Blum) Thompson. Esther attended Decorah High School. She married Arling Tennant in 1937 and they later divorced. Esther married Joy Hovden on August 24, 1964 at Caledonia, MN. Esther was a homemaker and they lived in Fort Dodge, until Joy died in 1991. She then returned to Decorah and lived in the Mill Street Apartments and then into the Aase Haugen Nursing Home two years ago. Esther enjoyed having coffee with her friends and attending family get-togethers. She was a member of the First Lutheran Church and the VFW Ladies Auxiliary in Fort Dodge and Decorah.
Esther’s survivors include her son: Ron (Tsai) Tennant, Calmar, IA; One grandson: Steven Tennant, Oxnard, CA; one great granddaughter: Kiana Tennant. Two brothers: Robert (Eileen) Thompson, Central City, IA and Jerry (Elaine) Thompson, Decorah, IA. One sister-in-law: Genevieve Dvorak, Decorah, IA and one brother-in-law: Carsten Hovden, Decorah, IA and many nieces and nephews.
Esther was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Joy in 1991; one step-son: Carwyn Hovden 1996; one brother: Luther Thompson in 1984; two brothers-in-law: John Hovden in 1998 and Leonard Dvorak in 1992; two sisters-in-law: Lorraine Hovden in 1996 and Ruth Thompson in 1999.
