Helen M. Herold Tlougan, age 95, of Decorah, IA, died Friday, February 17, 2006 at Aase Haugen Home in Decorah following a long illness.

Funeral Mass will be held at 11:00 A.M. Wednesday, February 22, 2006 at St. Benedict Catholic Church in Decorah by Rev. Gary F. Krapfl, with burial in the Church cemetery.

Friends may call on Tuesday, February 21, 2006 from 4:00 PM to 7:00 PM at Fjelstul Funeral Home in Decorah, where there will be a Rosary recited at 4:30 PM. Friends may also call on Wednesday after 10:00 AM at the Church.

Helen Mary Herold Tlougan was born February 15, 1911 in Decorah, Iowa, the daughter of Henry and Margurite (Murrey) Jennisch. She was baptized at St. Benedict’s Catholic Church in Decorah and was a lifetime member of the church. She attended St. Benedict’s Grade School and Decorah High School.

Helen was united in marriage to Cyril Herold of Cresco, Iowa in 1931 at St. Benedict Catholic Church. To this union, four children were born: Cletus, Robert, Mary Lou and Virginia. The marriage ended in 1948.

Helen worked at the Decorah Laundry and a small grocery store for several years. However, she was best known for working at the Ben Franklin Store, a job she held for seventeen years. She took pride in her work and focused on providing outstanding customer service.

She re-married in 1974, to Raymond Tlougan. They owned and operated the “Tlougan House of Clocks” in Spillville, Iowa. When they sold the business in 1976, they moved back to Decorah. Raymond passed away in 1985.

Helen was always known for her wonderful sense of humor that carried her through life. Her hobbies included cooking, growing flowers and dancing. Out of all her hobbies, dancing at Matter’s Ballroom was her favorite past time.

Helen became a resident of the Aase Haugen Home in Decorah on June 16, 1992.

Survivors include two sons, Cletus (Reva) Herold and Robert (Jerry) Herold, all of Des Moines, IA; two daughters, Mary Lou Luther of Hampton, IA and Virginia (Earl) Halse of Decorah, IA; twelve grandchildren; thirty-one great grandchildren; and three great-great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Raymond Tlougan; two sisters, Grace Broderick and Louise Embree; two brothers, Charles Jennisch and Henry Jennisch; two grandsons, Paul Herold and Craig Luther and a son-in-law, Robert Luther.
