Services for Orpha Brown, 80, were scheduled today at 11 a.m. at the Schutte Funeral Home in Postville. Verdon Swenson was the officiating pastor. Burial was in the Pleasant View Cemetery at Castalia.
Orpha Olga Brown, daughter of John Benjamin and Sophia (Campbell) Thias, was born July 6, 1905 in Allamakee County near Volney, Iowa. She died Feb. 17 at St. Joseph's Mercy Hospital in New Hampton.
She attended the local rural school and graduated from Waukon High School. June 29, 1927 she married Charles R. Brown. They had 3 children.
They farmed near the Waterville and Monona area until 1937 when they moved to Castalia where they were in business. In 1951 they moved to a farm near Waukon and retired in 1970 when they moved to Harpers Ferry. She had been a resident of Health Care Manor in New Hampton for the past several months.
She was preceded in death by her husband in 1974, a son, Charles William Brown in 1971, a great grandchild, Heather Brown, a brother Ford Thias and 3 sisters, Velva, Agnes and Anna.
Surviving are 2 daughters, Mary (Mrs. Arthur Svendsen) of Castalia and Kay (Mrs. Charles Grant) of Faribault, MN, a daughter-in-law, Virginia Brown of Castalia, 12 grandchildren and 16 great grandchildren.
She had been a member of the VFW Auxiliary in Postville and Harpers Ferry Senior Citizens.
Pall bearers at the funeral, all of them her grandsons, were: Larry and David Svendsen, Jerry, Gary and Charles T. Brown and Michael and Dana Grant.
