George E. Hanzlik, age 72, of Decorah, Iowa, died on Sunday, June 17, 2007, at the Barthell Eastern Star Home in Decorah, Iowa, following a long struggle with prostate cancer.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m., Friday, June 22, 2007, at the Decorah Lutheran Church, with Rev. James Glesne, Rev. Allen Vik and Rev. Bryan Robertson officiating. Burial will be in the Lutheran Cemetery.

Friends may call from 4:00-7:00 p.m. on Thursday, June 21, 2007, in the Fellowship Room of the Decorah Lutheran Church and after 10:00 a.m. at the church on Friday morning. The Schluter – Balik Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials to the Winneshiek County Hospice, the American Cancer Society or to the American Diabetes Association.

George Edward Hanzlik was born on April 6, 1935, the son of Otto and Cecile (Petro) Hanzlik in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. George graduated from Roosevelt High School in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, in 1953, and from Iowa State University in 1957, with a degree in Civil Engineering. George served in the US Army Corps of Engineering and was honorably discharged as a Captain. He worked for the Iowa Department of Transportation in Cedar Rapids, then as an assistant County Engineer in Jones County and as County Engineer for Delaware County from 1965 -71. On January 1, 1972, George became the County Engineer for Winneshiek County, serving for 28 years, before retiring in 2000. George married Barbara Jean Bany on April 21, 1963 at the Grace Lutheran Church in Tripoli, Iowa. George was a longtime member of the Decorah Lutheran Church, the Luren Singers, and Decorah Rotary. He was extremely proud of his endeavors to preserve historic bridges throughout the state. He enjoyed trains, traveling and antiquing with Barb, fishing with his buddies, socializing with friends and having coffee with the “Good O’ Boys” at McDonalds. But most of all, he enjoyed and loved his grandsons.

George’s survivors include his wife, Barbara Hanzlik, Decorah, IA. One son: Robert (Michelle) Hanzlik, Coon Rapids, MN, and their three sons: Samuel, Joseph and Nicholas. One daughter: Melinda Hanzlik, Milton Keynes, United Kingdom. Two sisters: Lillian Peterka, Swisher, IA and Emily Norden, Cedar Rapids, IA.

George was preceded in death by his parents.
