Gunder Jaastad Passes

Gunder L Jaastad, one of the well known pioneers of this county, passed away Tuesday afternoon, Oct. 7 at his home in Canoe, his death resulting from the infirmities of old age. He was born Jan. 30, 1834, in Norway. In July 1865 he was married to Jyri Jaastad, who passed away in 1919. Five children survive. They are John, Ben, Anna, Andrew and Amund and they have the sympathy of many friends in their loss.

The deceased was a man who lived a good life and was well liked by many friends. He was a good husband and father and always bore the respect and esteem of his neighbors and friends.

The funeral services were held on Saturday from the Springwater church. Rev. O. Glesne officiated and interment was in the adjoining cemetery.

GUNDER L. JAASTAD

One of Winneshiek country's old pioneers, Gunder L. Jaastad, passed away at 5 o'clock Tuesday afternoon, October 7, 1924, at the age of 90 years, 8 months and 7 days, at the home in Canoe township, where he had lived the past fifty-nine years. Old age was the cause of his death. He had been sick three months. The funeral was held Saturday, October 11, at 1 o'clock, at the home, and 2 o'clock at the Springwater church. Burial was made in the Springwater cemetery. Rev. O. Glesne officiated.

Gunder L. Jaastad was born January 30, 1934, at Hardanger, Norway, and was the son of Lars and Martha Jaastad. He received his education in Norway. When a young man he came to this country, and in the year 1858, he settled down in Winneshiek county. On July 30, 1865, in Decorah, he was united in marriage with Jyri Jaastad. To this union, eight children were born, Lars, John, Martha, Berent(Ben), Anna, Andrew, George and Amund. Mrs. Jaastad passed away, December 20, 1919.

The deceased was a member of the United Lutheran church. He was one of the old pioneers of this county, and was an upright man and loyal citizen. Farming had always been his occupation.

Among those from away who attended the funeral were, Mrs. Sever Danielson, of Caledonia, Minn., and Mr. Edward Danielson, of Spring Grove, Minn.

Submitters Note: Grave marker in Springwater Cemetery gives birth year for Gunder L Jaastad as 1835.
