Jack W. Grimes, age 81, of Decorah, IA, died Tuesday, December 27, 2011 at St. Luke’s Hospital in Cedar Rapids, IA.
Funeral Services will be held at 11:00 A.M. Saturday, December 31, 2011 at Congregational United Church of Christ in Decorah with Rev. John Caldwell officiating. Burial will be in Phelps Cemetery in Decorah.
Visitation will be from 4:00-7:00 P.M. Friday, December 30 at Fjelstul Funeral Home in Decorah and on Saturday one hour before the service at the church.
Jack Wilson Grimes was born August 2, 1930 in Nashua, Iowa, the son of Jesse Wilson and Muriel Lucile (Keef) Grimes. He graduated from West Union High School with the class of 1948. He started working at Northwestern Bell and then entered the U.S. Navy on January 23, 1951. He served in Japan as an aviation structurals mechanic and was honorably discharged on January 11, 1955. He returned to continue working with Northwestern Bell in West Union where he met his future wife Elaine.
Jack was united in marriage to Elaine J. Gottschalk on November 18, 1956 at Peace Evangelical and Reformed Church in Elkader, Iowa. This union was blessed with four children: Jan, Lynn, Julie and Lee.
He worked for the telephone company that became US West, retiring in 1992 after 42 years of service. Jack was a member of Congregational United Church of Christ in Decorah for over fifty years, where he was very active and served on the Board of Trustees and a search committee. He also was a long time member of Silvercrest Golf and Country Club, the V.F.W. and was a Troop Leader with the Boy Scouts. He liked to hunt, fish, garden and do yard work.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Jack is survived by his wife, Elaine; four children and their families: Jan Grimes of Oelwein, IA; Lynn (Bruce) Tiemann of Marion, IA and their sons, Benjamin (Fabienne) Tiemann and daughter Caitlin of Waterloo, IA and Andrew Tiemann of Cedar Falls, IA; Julie Grimes of Marion, IA and her son Aaron Grimes; Lee (Sharon) Grimes of Omaha, NE and their children, Ryan, Meghan and Madeline; two brothers-in-law, Don (Sara) Gottschalk of Cedar Falls, IA and Glen (Deborah) Gottschalk of Burlington, IA; and by three nieces, one nephew and their families.
The family requests that memorial gifts be designated to Congregational United Church of Christ in Decorah or to multiple system atrophy research at Mayo Clinic. Gifts can be mailed directly to Mayo Clinic, Department of Development, 200 First Street SW, Rochester, MN 55905.
