John Brandt

Funeral services were conducted for John Brandt, a life-long resident of this vicinity, at Zion Lutheran Church of Castalia on Friday, August 16. The Rev. Edgar Zelle officiated. Mr. Brandt made his home with is daughter, Mrs. Irene Ostlie of Clermont since 1945. He had been failing in health during the last 5 years and died at the Postville Hospital on Tuesday, August 13. He was 84 years old.

John Gottlieb Brandt was born on April 10, 1873 at Garnavillo, Iowa, the son of Gottlieb and Marie (Hartman) Brandt. He was baptized and confirmed at St. Paul's Lutheran Church of Postville. When he was a small child, his parents moved to a farm in Grand Meadow township, Postville. He was united in marriage with Emma Caroline Schroeder of Postville. Four children were born to this union: Irene, Walter, Hattie and Oran.

Mr. Brandt was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, 5 brothers and 4 sisters. He is survived by four children: Mrs. Irene Ostlie of Clermont, Walter of Castalia, Mrs. Earl Bachelder of West Union, and Oran of Maquoketa, 9 grandchildren, and 12 great grandchildren; one brother, Charles Brandt, and a sister, Mrs. Christian Behrens, both of Fort Atkinson; and many nephews and nieces.
