Merle A. Fulsaas, age 87, of Decorah, Iowa, died Sunday, September 28, 2008 at Winneshiek Medical Center, Decorah, IA as a result of pneumonia.

Funeral Services will be held at 11:00 A.M. Wednesday, October 1, 2008 at Madison Lutheran Church in Decorah by Revs. Phillip and Ginny Olson with burial in Madison Lutheran Church East Cemetery, rural Decorah.

Friends may call from 4:00 – 7:00 P.M. Tuesday, September 30, 2008 at Fjelstul Funeral Home in Decorah and an hour prior to the services on Wednesday at the church.

Merle Alden Fulsaas was born February 14, 1921, on the family farm in Madison Township, Decorah, IA, the son of Albert and Ruth (Holstad) Fulsaas. He was baptized on March 20, 1921 and confirmed on May 19, 1935 at Madison Lutheran Church rural Decorah. He attended Madison #3 grade school and Decorah High School graduating at the top of his class in 1939. He served in the U.S. Army Air Corp from 1942-1946.

On October 27, 1952 Merle was united in marriage to Laurice V. Gossman in the Rectory of St. Agnus Catholic Church, Cresco, IA. This union was blessed with two sons: Gary and John.

Merle was an active member of Madison Lutheran Church and throughout the years had served on the church council and taught Sunday school. He was involved in his community and worked in many capacities: Boy Scout Leader, 4-H Leader, various committees with the Winneshiek County Farm Bureau which included serving as president from 1962-1964, Madison Township Clerk for 54 years, Winneshiek County Condemnation Board for 6 years, Rural Fire Department Trustee; and IPLA Board, and had been a member of the American Legion for 60 years.

He also was an avid reader, reading 3-4 books each week, and enjoyed traveling, fishing and going to sporting events.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Gordan Fulsaas and one brother-in-law, Gordan Rovang.

Merle is survived by his wife, Laurice of Decorah, IA; two sons: Gary Fulsaas of Oswego, NY and John Fulsaas of Daytona Beach, FL; one granddaughter, Abby Rose of Oswego, NY who was his pride and joy; one brother, Roy (Pat) Fulsaas of Ridgeway, IA, one sister, June Rovang of Decorah, IA; one sister-in-law, Joanne Fulsaas of Decorah, IA and many nieces and nephews.

Everyone should be so blessed to know a “Merle” in their lifetime.
