Gordon Fulsaas, age 82, of Decorah, Iowa, died Thursday, December 14, 2006 at Barthell Eastern Star Nursing Home in Decorah following a lingering illness.

Funeral Services will be held at 11:00 A.M. Monday, December 18, 2006 at Madison Lutheran Church in rural Decorah by Rev. Phillip Olson and Rev. Ginny Olson. Burial will be in Madison Lutheran Cemetery.

Friends may call from 4:00-7:00 P.M. Sunday, December 17, 2006 at Fjelstul Funeral Home in Decorah and on Monday after 10 A.M. Monday at the church.

Gordon Fulsaas was born December 11, 1924 at home on the Fulsaas family farm in Madison Township, Winneshiek County, Iowa, the son of Albert and Ruth (Holstad) Fulsaas. He was baptized on January 1, 1925 and confirmed on May 21, 1939 at Madison Lutheran Church, rural Ridgeway, Iowa. He was educated at Madison Country School #3 and received a certificate of perfect attendance through 8th grade. He attended Ridgeway High School and graduated from Decorah High School with the Class of 1943.

He was united in marriage with Joanne Turner on June 27, 1959 at First United Methodist Church in Decorah. This union was blessed with three sons: Jerome, Todd and Lee.

Gordon spent his lifetime as a farmer. He taught Sunday School at Madison Lutheran Church, served on the Madison Lutheran Cemetery Board, dug graves, mowed and cared for the cemetery for many years. He was a member of the Winneshiek County Board of Supervisors for 12 years; served as Winneshiek County Farm Bureau President and on the membership committee. Gordon was a past member of the Interstate Producers Livestock Association (IPLA) and was past president and a long time member of the Board of Directors for Norwegian Mutual Insurance Co.

Gordon enjoyed deer hunting trips to Wyoming and horseback riding trips to the Black Hills. Other than farming, horseback riding was his passion. He was a lifelong member of the Winneshiek County Saddle Club. Gordon planned and led several overnight trail rides for more than 25 years. Prior to his illness, Gordon and Joanne had made their home and traveled in a motor home. While on the road he did volunteer work, including helping build homes, assisting with hurricane cleanup and community projects in various towns they visited. He was proud to say that he had been in all 50 states.

Gordon became a resident of the Barthell Eastern Star Home on April 14, 2005. He died at the home on Thursday, December 14, 2006 following a lingering illness at the age of 82 years.

Survivors include his wife of over 47 years, Joanne of Decorah; three sons, Jerome and his wife Jannelle Fulsaas of Decorah, Todd Fulsaas of Decorah and Lee and his wife Polly Fulsaas of Yorktown, VA; four grandchildren, Danielle and Eric Fulsaas (Jerome’s children) and Clara and Lee Abraham (Lee’s children); two brothers, Merle (Laurice) Fulsaas of Decorah and Roy (Pat) Fulsaas of Ridgeway; and a sister, June (Gordon) Rovang of Decorah.

Gordon was preceded in death by his parents.
